^ Very modern stations. Some of them look like contemporary versions of Montreal's subway.

A few more nicely designed stations from Stockholm + some train pictures. Not many cities decorate their stations like them :

They look better with the colours instead of seeing them grey

I might be biased, but I'll throw in the metro of Vienna.

Its not too large (65,6 km, 90 stations) as Vienna has not more than 1.5 million inhabitants. But its clean, efficient, with a good network structure with good connections to the extensive tram and bus networks and the light and regular railway. Not to forget that its safe and it combines historical Jugendstil-stations from the end of the 19th century with modern ones. All stations are also usable for disabled people and the prices are fair.

historic station:

I prefer London over New York and Paris. Many of New York's subway stations are very badly maintained and smell. London has done a lot of work with their stations in Zone 1. Paris' stations are a bit more spacious but they're still a little dirty.

I have to disagree with you there. Your own metro in Barcelona is far dirtier than London and Paris. Even in the central city, many stations were covered in graffiti with some incredibly bad tunnels - one of the worse was Passieg de Gracia, especially the suburban section and the tunnel to the metro. This is one of the most important stations in central Barcelona and was shocking. I never found any station in central London anywhere near the level of this station.

Not that I'm putting down Barcelona's excellent transport network, but to say the London Underground is dirtier is simply wrong, it was at least when I visited Barcelona last year, completely the opposite.

no need more lights in mm. there is enough light - not bright, not dark. lights is a part of architecture on every station. as much as needed for good feel.

From now to then more lights are added in Moscow metro. The requirements for lighting changes constantly.
For instance, when the station Novokuznetskaya was opened in the first half of the last century, the newspapers wrote that the station was drowning in the light. That time it seemed that the station was very bright.
But later more lights were added, because the lighting of the station didn't correspond to new demands...

^ That last one was modeled after Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?

There are needs of more lights in MM. And they do more lights, changing lamps to more powerfull, adding more lamps. More lights installed at Botanicheskiy sad, Kropotkinskaya, Serpukhovskaya and now they are working at Prospect Mira, some other stations. The metro is not a museum. The double-triple overloaded Moscow metro needs more lights - it's a question of passenger's security and their mood: less light cause the depression.

dusty lamp shades doesn't mean that staion is dark. shades are regulary cleaning. serpukhavskaya was a bit dark just because the fiber got broken. it was replaced by traditional lamps, which are not really much lighter.
there are enough lights in mm. and lightning is soft - not overbrighted or underbrighted...

^ I have to agree with Coth here on the MM lighting. The stations don't look too dark to me, but atmospheric. I hate bright lighting in buildings.

They are really much lighter. I'm a metro fan and I know what am I talking to. I saw how they removed this fiber. Some old stations and escalators are really dark, dangerously dark, not many of them but some. And this number is decreasing.

You know lighting in new trains is much brighter than in old ones because the lighting standarts were changed. But some stations were built on old standarts. And now people come from very light train to a dark station and they became blind. It is dangerous. Metro management knows it and trying to make stations more light where it possible. There is no place for darkness in transport system serving up to 10 million passengers every day.
