In Europe I have to say Paris.

The London subway is overrated.

SEOUL's metro system

On April 12 1971... Seoul's first metro Jongno Line(a part of today's Line 1) length 9.54km construction was started... Here are sights of ground breaking ceremony and construction...

Jongno Line was completed on August 15 1974...

This map shows Seoul's metro lines of present time... It is still being continued to extend new lines in Seoul...

Some pics of Seoul's metro...

I was quite amazed to see gas masks available at some of Seoul's subway stations.

I don't think a gas attack ever happened on the Seoul subway, right?

Some of the chimes and announcements are also very similar to Japan, although Koreans are very sensitive to being branded too closely with the Japanese due to historic reasons.

Lyon subway looks really cool! I also think the Delhi metro is very good, not the best in the world, but a great model for cities like Mumbai and Bangalore to follow to perhaps become the best.

I would have to say Tokyo and Seoul for the best subways atm, although Leon looks awesome too.

Tokyo's subway system is going through the same aging problems as other older systems such as London and New York, although it seems a lot cleaner but still some of the platforms are narrow and the ticket halls can get quite cramped.

True but one thing nice about Tokyo's subway system is they have a smart card system (SUICA)

This just came out in yesterday's newswires :
*********************

Tokyo's rail system introduces common fare card

TOKYO, March 18, 2007 (AFP) - Tokyo's public transportation system Sunday introduced a common fare card called Pasmo, which allows commuters to ride almost all the trains, subways and buses in the capital without buying separate tickets.

East Japan Railway Co. (JR East), one of the nation's main railway operators, has already offered a similar service in Tokyo with a rechargeable integrated-circuit card called Suica.

Users of Suica, which also can be used as a commuting train pass, do not need to buy tickets and simply hold it over a censor at gates to get on trains.

But they still have to buy tickets at venders or use unrechargeable cards when they use the train systems operated by other companies, including subway lines and buses.

Pasmo can interchange with the Suica card, and its users can ride almost all the trains and buses in Tokyo and neighboring prefectures.

Users of the Pasmo card, which can be recharged by up to 20,000 yen (170 dollars) at once, can also use it as electronic money at station stands and convenience stores.

*********************

London is also using a common smart card called Oyster while New York is testing out a similar technology as well. It doesn't really take away from the fact that these 3 systems are fairly old, and require a lot of money to maintain given today's progressive standards.

santiago de chile also introduced a common fare system using a magnetic card february 2007, when they integrated the subway, suburban train, and a new city bus system under the plan known as Transantiago. unfortunately they still need to tweak the bus system but the integrated fares are working well.

new yorks high point is its express service. at express stops you can transfer between local and express trains. this greatly speeds up the commute as you can skip stops. for example, if you live near a local stop but need to travel a long distance, you get on a local train and take it to the next express stop. there transfer to an express train. Its so easy & convenient. it also allows for the system to remain open 24 hrs.

New York's last major finished construction project was the 6th Avenue Subway line, completed in 1940(!). Moscow's construction did only just begin by then, and major construction works have been going on until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The only advantage NY's system has over Moscow's, is that it is rather dense. But that's about the only advantage I can think of: frequencies are being lowered by the MTA, services cut back (notorious is the G line), the Lexington line has been overcrowded for years but the alleviating Second Avenue Subway line has been nothing but a pipe dream for the last 80 (!) years.

Yeah...NY is definitely better than Moscow. If you believe in your own lies, that is...

This is completely unfair. The pictures u have of NY are 30 years old. The trains haven't looked that bad since the 80s when NY was in an economic crisis. Now the stations in the pictures have been renovated and the trains replaced. an fyi construction on the 2nd avenue line has officially begun. the 7 line is also being expanded to the west side. there will also be east side access for lirr commuter rail as well as a possible jfk downtown rail connection. the airtrain at jfk was also built recently.

If you are going to compare pictures at least be fair and use recent pics.

I am not saying ny is the best. Moscow is a very beautiful system. i do not disagree with that. however you must be fair when comparing it to other systems. ny is dirty and old and some of the stations are disgusting but this is due to 30 years of neglect due to an economic crisis. the mta is slowly fixing this and it is getting better. sure there are definitely cleaner systems. however, ny has express and local service as well as 24 hr service. New projects are scheduled for the future. next time do your research.

we have passed it already. express service doesn't mean best service, simply because there are many much more faster systems even without express service.
