Tokyo, Seoul, Moscow(mostly for the stations, but some of the new trains are great.) Singapore deserves an honorable mention too.

Some really groovy and artsy stations (particularly Santiago and Napoli). Guarantee that any subway/metro we ever get in Australia will be just 4 plain walls and a train
![]() London and New York are very practical. For that alone, I'd rate them the best. |

In my opinion, Hong Kong is MTR is the best as it is relatively clean, safe, efficient, and well-staffed although its trains and some stations are old. The Octopus Card system is one of its kind. It is impossible to find graffiti except the ones purposely made by the MTR Corporation.
There are others which deserve recognition: The Singapore MRT is similar to the Hong Kong MTR and it is basically great. The Tokyo Subway/Toei Metro is quite good, but it's map is really hard to understand, people being shoved by staff into trains, and lots of people sleeping in the stations at night. Other than that it is efficient and quite clean. Pretty much the same for other Japanese Metros. The Seoul Subway is great in the way that there are stations all around the city. It is modern, safe and clean and recordings are announced in 2-4 languages. The safety precautions are prepared really well. Anyways, it is a good system. Same for the Busan Subway. The Moscow Metro has grand, beautiful stations but some of its trains look really old. One major problem is the stray dogs around the system. Pretty much same style and architecture with the Saint Petersburg Metro The Mainland Chinese Metros are mostly new and modern and. It is a great way of getting around. The NYC Subway is in quite a poor condition with constant floods. Litter and rodents invade the stations and crime rates are somewhat high. However, it is a good system with stations all over the city and lots of express services which avoid stopping at every station. It is one of the few metro systems that run 24 hours a day. I have also noticed a large number of "weird" people traveling. As for the Paris Metro, there are not many great features apart from its network coverage. It is old... There are more pickpockets and strange people than others systems from around the world. There are also lots of people urinating or defecating on the ground. The Mexico City Metro is a good way to travel with nice stations. The London Underground, is the classic. The trains are nice and I love the tube map. There are a few major problems with it: Overheating, try going on the tube (S Stock trains excluded) and see how long you can stay on it without dying from the heat. There is no air conditioning!!! There are some people urinating or defecating on the ground. There are constant delays and one can hardly get an entire day without delays on the network while the staff are on strike, or there is something wrong with the signals and stuff. The fares are way overpriced, even with an Oyster Card. If you don't use an Oyster Card the cheapest far is £4! The Cairo Metro is ok. Not much to say about it. The South American Metros are mostly good, for example, the Sao Paulo Metro, Santiago Metro, Buenos Aires Metro, etc. The Metros in Spain are mostly modern, but excuse the pickpockets for that matter. The Milan and Rome Metro are kind of good too. The Taipei Metro is nice and modern. The stations and trains are quite beautiful. The German U-Bahns are old but effective. The Kiev Metro and Pyongyang metro have a bit of the Soviet style in them and old trains. By the way, I got to travel the whole system when I went to Pyongyang so the other stations are not fake. The Kiev metro also has new trains so it is not all old. The Tehran Metro is clean and has its local Iranian style to it. The Delhi Metro is efficient and good. Both the trains and stations on the Athens Metro are quite nice. I don't really like the Toronto Subway because its just plain old and nothing to special about it. I especially like the Stockholm Metro as it has stations like caves and new trains are nice and modern. For the rest of the Metro systems in the U.S. they are not exactly great and the trains look like they are made of scrap metal, or are they? The BART is especially terrible with trains every 15 minutes during peak hours a joke to me. The seats on the BART are infested with microbes which is really unpleasant. The Vancouver Skytrain is modern and its system map is really nice. It is the best metro system in North America. The Copenhagen Metro is a light metro which modern with beautiful trains and stations. Certainly one of the best in the world. I like the Tyne and Wear Metro map and the network is good overall. The Dubai metro is very modern with stations and trains that look great. The Almaty Metro has nice trains and is a mix between grand Soviet style stations and cool, modern stations. Worth visiting. Am I just listing many metro systems? Guess lots of them are really good. |
