Just to put in proportion: this campus could house a 40,000
residential neighborhood!

yes you can see what a waste of space this campus is!
All this campus could fit in very well in half or even a third of the space..

very bad planning.
especially notice the triangle of old dorms near the west gate, with giant "green" spaces between them - just useless uncared for spaces with rats and termites. All these dorms could fit in two 20-floor towers which could take up a fifth of that space.

Also notice the huge unnecessary parking space cutting into the forest,
because ONLY 2 buildings in the technion have underground parking.
yep just TWO.

This is what happens when a municipality like Haifa gives a private
institution lots of land, without ability to say anything about its planning.
The Technion just do whatever they like, and its a big mistake
that Haifa municipality is regretting.

If you go southeast from Technion, you will find an apartment where my grandfather lives in.

Erm... no. You couldn't. IF you go around the center of the campus, you can see how dense it is. ( Ullman-Physics-Fischach-El.Eng.-Mat.Eng.-Solid State-Med. Engineering - all of those are on the same small street, and will have the addition of the Nanotech building ).

The old dorms ( the triangle, as you called it) will be removed, with time, and as you see, the new dorms that are being built in the east, are as dense as possible.

Underground Parkings are being built for all new buildings, and that parking high above - is full every day, and enjoys a shuttle service. Plus, it has some facilities there that are NIMBYs - the garbage compactor, and the, ahem, storage.

Now, I agree that more can be done - but don't diss the institute too much. It tries hard.

The technion made plenty of mistakes. How can you tell? well they have had to add floors to over 5-6 buildings in recent years!

They are still not building high enough, still spreading too much. They almost never built underground parking even when it was buildings that had 100 staff in them.
You can see by the huge carparks in every street and next to each buildings how they are waisting space - because they have plenty to waste.

All the NIMBY's could be well placed in half the space they tak up now. you have old buildings that are 1-2 floors, and as dense as the east dorms are, they are planning new dorms on top of the hill which will be again only 2-3 floors..

Instead of ruining the forest with more parking space they should have built a multi-storey carpark in the center of the technion, but they prefer to save money and ruin a beautiful forest - because they can..
