Thanks, sn1101. The North East is indeed a very beautiful work of nature. The region is plagued by militancy (severe only in Manipur and parts of Assam and non existent in Sikkim, Mizoram, Meghalaya and most parts of Arunachal Pradesh), but it is not as dangerous as you see or hear on your daily newspaper or TV. It is quite safe, infact, as safe as any other region in the country. I believe the tourism sector has the highest potential for the economic upliftment of the region. Except for Sikkim and some parts of Assam, the industry is still in its infancy. Hopefully, with equal enthusiasm from the people of the region and the Central Government, the North East will catch up with the rest of the country soon.

When I visited Vasai, my hometown, I witnessed a vast selection of Portuguese-era and Portuguese inspired churches. These were built in the Portuguese Bassein period and after due to its influence.

Vasai has a few major churches dating back from between 50 and 450 years.

Girij church, not built in the Baroque / Rococo and Neobaroque style of most of Vasai's other churches.

Tellicherry Church Restored

Hello,

I have recently learned that Thalassery Church is being restored. The story behind this church can be read at

http://malabardays.blogspot.com/2009...-restored.html

where there are many other photos of the work underway.

I don't know who is responsible for this work, but they appear to be doing an excellent job, and in keeping with the original structure.
