nice pics. I have to say i am a little disapointed that the stock exchange tower is getting a reclad. It may look a bit brutal but thats how they were done in the 60s. Contrast in building styles and periods is good...o well.

Why are they getting rid of Drapers gardens? Ok it looks a bit scruffy, but it will be ashame to say goodbye to it. Can they not put a new set of clothes on this instead of the SE tower!!!

The stock exchange tower is so ugly and should be demolished, it really spoils the image when you look at St Pauls or the Gerkin.

but remember Parisians hated the Eiffel tower when first built, i don't think we should go about demolishing or recladding everything, they are all part of our history. Who in the 19th century would have thought about protecting Victorian Factories or Chimneys? But today Victorian warehouses are quite desirable.

Ok it is ugly, but whats the point in recladding history? The new skyscrapers in the city serve to show how highrise architechure has changed when placed in the context of older buildings. It just seems a bit of a shame.

In my vocabulary, when I call a city "chaotic" it means that I like it. Chaos (vibrancy) is what makes a city for me. and I love London too! Now that I'm beginning to like British Culture.

but look at the difference it has made to the CIS tower in Manchester, I will put up to a few points to highlight my point in a bit.

All true, but there is a huge differnce between pre war architecture such as victorian and edwardian and most 50's, 60's, 70's stuff.

No real thought and certainly no deep sense of style and beauty was placed into the post war designs. Older styles were built to express majesty, grandeur, flair and sense of patriotism and nationality.

Post war stuff was built to directly oppose this and to be as totalitarian and classless as possible. The ancien regime was seen to be evil by some who sought to cheaply build drab, sterile uninspiring rubbish. It wasnt all rubbish but most of it is.

Waterloo bridge for example is a travesty, look at the bridge it replaced...or am i getting confused with london bridge ?? I always do for some reason.

Look at the sheer damage that has been done in our cities, Birmingham is a good case in point...Huge beautiful majestic buildings built for people in mind, replaced by concrete shite for no other reason than filling wallets and aiming for some misplaced communist utopian dream

Actually none of what ive said has anything to do with why we shouldnt keep examples. I just wanted a rant !

As ever Zenith, I totally agree. We have knocked down too many good buildings to replace them with rubbish. Lets knock down the commi blocks and replace them with real quality.

Re the CIS tower, before it was ugly grey concrete, it's now being clad in solar panals and is starting to look alot better:

I totally agree that buildings like this benifit from recladding. It was just the stock exchange tower which i think is a shame to reclad, as it is a building which uses concrete in an accomplished way, similar to the Haywood gallery on the south bank.

This looks impressive, elephant and castle is a bit of a mess and needs something like this. Intersting design too, it look almost telescopic. I take it those 3 circles at the top are for the turbines? very smart!
