Some "commie blocks" in Nantes, France :
Tallest "commie block" in Nantes, with 30 floors : ![]() Pictures from the 1960's : ![]() ![]() Quote:
You probably haven't been in Marseille, one of the commieblocks capitals of Europe. There are also a lot of commieblocks in Toulouse, Nice, Toulon, etc... Actually, all the cities in France, even the small, have "commieblocks" or "housing projects", whatever you call them.

this is such a great thread ... i noticed public housing in the west are usually of isolated towers surrounded
by parking lots and grass ... very corbusier-like but not very sustainable ... i found the public housing in hkg and sing to be the most developed ... as the two cities lack space and has gone through quite a few generations of public housing already specially the newer ones ... |

Just by looking at that apartment block in Nantes, it give an enviroment that can produce social problems especially crime.
Buffalo, New York is actually a mid-size American city with a population of around 282,864 and 1,237,557 in it's metropolitan area. And yes they have mid-rise to high-rise projects that resembles that of NYC. Buffalo housing projects Fredrick Douglass Homes ![]() Glenny Drive Apartments ![]() It is interesting that public housing programs are very successful in Asian countries while public housing in the west are mostly failures. Trying to fix the images!
Anyway, Los Angeles also has a grand public housing system. But despite of the city's huge area and population, it's housing projects are low-rise compared to other cities in the US. LA housing projects Imperial Courts ![]() Jordan Downs ![]() If anyone has images of Nickerson Gardens, it would be helpful! Thanks Last edited by Manila-X; August 25th, 2005 at 07:48 AM. |

I'm not an urban designer nor an architect. I'm a graphic designer but I also do some illustrations and photography. I play Simcity alot though and I used to live in public housing here in HK. I listen to alot of hip-hop. Alot of rap tracks talked about life in public housing and alot of rappers came from there.
The one in Nantes, though not a good idea for some, to me it would be better if the city demolish those towers and build a mixed residential community ![]() More public housing in the U.S. (Midwest) Chicago, Illinois Cabrini Green ![]() ![]() Robert Taylor Homes ![]() ![]() Aren't public housing cool?? I really love the Red Roads flats in Glasgow (si si !). They are so monumental. I have read somewhere on these forums that they will be demolished. It's a pity.
Some other public housing in France : Les tours nuages in Paris (more exactly in Nanterre, near Paris) : Some other pictures of these strange towers on this site : http://eras.free.fr/html/archi/nuages.html La Duchère, a (very) big project in Lyon : ![]()

Tubeman and GM, thanks for posting these images! I'm really interested in those housing estates in Paris, the one right beside La Defense. The architecture is really impressive for public housing and also the use of colors. But I would like to know about the conditions inside those flats. Also, is crime a problem in these towers or do the tenants feel safe living there?
Glasgow's public housing look like taller versions of London's council estates. In fact, some of the city's housing estates resemble housing projects in New York especially the Bronx. ![]() The Hilliard Homes in Chicago resembles the Les Tour Nauges in Paris. The building was originally built as a housing project but underwent renovations. Today, the building are affordable apartments especially to senior citizens and families. |

New York has the largest public housing system in the United States. Also, one of the most successful. Most of the housing projects in other US cities have been demolished and have been replaced by a mixed used community.
What is currently the largest housing project in NYC? |
