The best subway system it not merely the biggest. Hong Kong's MTR is the world's first system to use smart card technology. The Octopus card was launched in the 1990s and is fully integrated with the other public transit modes.

In terms of technology and station design, since the MTR is a newer system, it is far well adapt to today's needs than much older systems. The platforms are wide, with lots of escalators to relieve crowds, and interchanges are easy with cross-platform switches.

I find the MTR much easier to use than other large systems, including New York, London, Paris, and Tokyo. Those systems are far older, and were designed for that era.

rail transport is one of the reason why hkg enjoys the lowest private vehicles/1000inhabitants in the world ...
seoul, singapore and taipei should also make the list ...

new delhi can be in the list, although only 61km is operational so far, out of the proposed 221km(which will be completed by 2020!!!).
anyway, my vote goes to HK or tokyo

Moscow. It's the finest of the 70 or so subway systems I have ever ridden.
However, I have not ridden it lately, so if it has not been kept up or no longer runs on time, I might have to change my mind.
I am surprised NYC leads the poll so far. The new cars are great, but the stations still come up short. But I believe NYC has the only 24 hour system on the list, so that is a plus.
