It really depends on what you mean as ''historic''.

In terms of historical importance:

- for the early history (Antiquity, Middle Ages): Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Jerusalem

- for recent history (from 18. century onwards): Paris, London, Berlin, Wien, Moscow, St. Petersburg

In terms of historical architecture:

My favorite is surely Rotherburg ob der Tauber, it's perfectly preserved medieval town wall just totally pawns! But the problem is that i'm not sure if it's big enough to call it a ''city''.

Of the bigger cities Wien, Budapest, Prague, Cracow and Rome are surely good candidates for that title.

Berlin should definitely be mentioned for the more recent history.

For ancient/medieval history, we shouldn't forget about places like Damascus, Cologne, Venice, Lübeck, Augsburg, Alexandria, Shibam, Hamburg, Carthago, Tenochtitlan, Amritsar, Burghausen, Baghdad, Medina, Akkon, Seleukeia, Babylon, Arsuf, Edo (Tokyo today), Petra, San'aa, Assur, Muscat, Texcoco, Angkor, Cairo, Patna, Tikal, Xi'an... Damn, there are so many.

Sure, many of those places have been important just on a regional base or for a rather short period of time. But I think it's interesting to rate their influence with today's measures.

JERUSALEM... it is the jewel that all or most of the world's religions have in common and the city that is most fought over by these religions. No city of its size has had an effect so large on the world's history.

1.Athens-its still very much the same
2.Delhi-7 legendary cities of Delhi witness of epic battles and incredible drama, world's oldest existing capital city
3.Beijing-center of a great empire
4.Rome-center for renaissance
5.Alexandria-key for Egyptian and later Islam rule
6.tel aviv-very important for two of the world's biggest cultures
7.London-center of the new modern world
8.Varanasi-oldest city in existence in its true form, others have changed
9.Kyoto-all about Japanese and far east history lies here

Well its just so happens that Rome has huge number of ancient treasures, unlike Beijing, which is mostly all modern.

Beijing has only been the centre of the Chinese empire for 800 years. Xian has been for over 1300 years.
