Personally, I prefer the Melbourne toll signage as at least it's organised and there is a theme to differentiate toll roads. Perhaps the 'TOLL' patch is being used on the Eastlink* to conform to some national guideline due to the poor signage in NSW and Qld? There is still some original Logan Mwy signage that is simply white on green lettering in full upper case that says 'TOLL ROAD', even worse. Thanks Nexis for your photos, always interesting to make comparisions with overseas. *Yes, I did notice the toll patch on Eastlink signs in January and thought it was peculiar. When they first built CityLink, they also painted the words "TOLL" onto all the lanes that went onto the tollway, probably as a political reason to show that they are not trying to force people onto the tollway or something like that?

Love this one. The dirt on the road, the slightly damaged faded green sign, with the unfamiliar names, and a sense of seeing a place that you have only known as just a dot on the map. I'm getting all nostalgic and shit now. To paraphrase Sarah Palin, it's the real Australia.

Google's street view is now available for South Africa and fonts on the 'Arrive Alive' campaign signs that I've seen (yes, they've copied the Aussie idea, for better or worse - you decide) are in the new font that we saw here in some photos from the US of new signs.
eta: seems to be general signs as well, here are some examples: http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/743/picture24ck.png Remembered the zoom function: http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/4773/picture25a.png South Aus style 'square' corners, no beveled corners. The govt talked broadly about about significant funds for repair of all infrastructure in the state from this year's series of floods, hopefully this includes roads and to a well-done standard. Personally, having driven to Roma in 1993 when the roads were probably no worse than now, I'd slide the car onto the train and choo choo out there that way. Driving of course is always more interactive. |

I thought I might put the photo that I took with my mobile phone (hence the awful quality), but it made me giggle a little bit.

A recent trip to the Mornington Peninsula... Has anyone noticed that our freeways down have all been reduced to 100kmh?

I always thought Eastlink was 100 km/h and the Aspendale Gardens - Frankston section of the Mornington Peninsula/Frankston Fwys were always 100 km/h. Not so sure on the southern leg, a quick check of google's street view circa Jan 2008 would help. Onto signs, there are some oversize, NSW sized ones at the southern end of the Go Between Bridge, I think I mentioned that I drove past on Thu in early May when the signs were being erected, workers with sign plans in hand. There's a great schematic at the southern end of the northbound bridge (it is 2 bridges side-by-side with 2 levels of mesh linking them) to organise drivers into the correct lane to approach the Milton end/intersection. As of at least last Fri night (I've been outta town), all the approaches have had a bright blue and white 'lane sign' painted on the lanes of which are destined for the bridge - an arrow, the bridge outline/logo and GBB. A more sophisticated version of the usual white paint for ICB, CCT, LCT etc. Of course, I must whinge that QTMR haven't seen the Victorian light and required toll roads to have the gold on blue signage as seen in mx5star's photos. |

Blue and gold was a mistake. They should have picked some other colour scheme which performed well in differing light conditions.

Eastlink or the Eastern Freeway was never 110kmh. The freeway to Geelong (M1?) was after you got near Altona. I also noticed on the peninsula freeway that the speed limit has been reduced and *keep left unless overtaking* signs + trucks must not use the middle lane. mx |

post #730 'slippery when sweaty' - is that Lower Plenty Rd, Rosanna?
Are my eyes deceiving me? Tonight driving on the ring road in Melbourne, the sign for the Tullamarine Fwy turnoff showed SR10 (not SR43 for Tulla) and after the roadworks and just before the Sydney Rd bridge there was a big sign that says 'Thank You ' Thanking us motorists for what? being patient with the roadworks?

Don't mind a gantry given it's in the right location (i.e. over a 6+ lane high speed carriageway where a sign on the left wouldn't suffice). From what I can recall, most of Victoria's freeways (including regional areas) feature gantries on approach to exits - on a 4 lane carriageway, a sign to the left of the roadway should suffice.

Gantries aren't plentiful on the rural freeways - even the M1 between Werribee and Corio doesn't have gantries at every exit, only major ones.

Lies - all exits (except to the servo near Avalon, but that doesn't really count)) between Brooklyn and Corio have gantry signs.
