Coal power firm to start mangrove rehab in city

PANAY Energy Development Corporation (PEDC), operator of the 164-megawatt coal-fired power plant supplying power to Panay Electric Company, has embarked on a mangrove management project in La Paz, Iloilo City.

PEDC, a subsidiary of Global Business Power Corp. (GBPC), signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR 6) and the Iloilo City government for its Eco-Park Development and Mangrove Management, Rehabilitation, Protection and Enhancement Project.

GBPC president Arthur Aguilar said the mangrove rehabilitation and management project is part of its corporate social responsibility in protecting the environment.

The 35-hectare eco-park is located within the GBPC complex in the villages of Ingore and Hinactacan.

Rene Morente, GBPC assistant vice president for health, service and safety, disclosed that the mangrove project is an integral part of its carbon sink project.

Morente explained it will sequester carbon emissions as well as mitigate the adverse effect of climate change.

The five-year project will also maximize the private public-private partnership (PPP) in having a sustainable environment.

Meanwhile, GBPC and PEDC have formed a special committee to manage and oversee the five-year project.

Last November 2011, it also embarked on a P1.5-million reforestation program at the Jalaur Watershed River Basin.

DOT-DPWH push prioritization of 39 infra projects under convergence program

ILOILO CITY, March 12 (PNA) – Thirty-nine infrastructure projects in Western Visayas have been identified by the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) here to be included in the "Convergence Program on Enhancing Tourism Access."

Heads of the two agencies have already signed the projects endorsement to the central office for further evaluation using the Tourism Road Infrastructure Project Prioritization Criteria (TRIPPC).

The TRIPPC was formalized on January 19 this year following the signing of the convergence program by the two agencies. The TRIPPC will now serve the basis for evaluating tourism-related projects.

Of the 39 projects, seven are in Capiz; 12 in Aklan; nine in Negros Occidental and three each in cities of Bacolod and Iloilo and five in Guimaras.

These projects together with seven other infrastructure projects pushed by the Iloilo Business Club (IBC) and the Research, Education and Institutional Development Foundation, Inc (REID) have been forwarded to the central office this month.

DPWH Planning and Design Division chief Engr. Sanny Boy Oropel said that it is now for their central office to conduct further evaluation and determine which of the proposed projects will be prioritized for possible funding. (PNA)

Newcomer sets aggressive drugstore expansion

The cebu-based drugstore chain ThreeSixty Pharmacy plans to open 20 more stories in the Visayas this year.

“We are confident [we will] operate 60 stores when we mark our second anniversary on May 27 and 80 branches by the end of this year,” said business operations manager Len C. Ramos. Sites have been identified in Dumaguete and Iloilo cities.

Mayor accepts challenge on urban mangrove project
Monday, March 12, 2012

MAYOR Jed Patrick Mabilog has accepted the challenge of putting up and developing an urban mangrove reforestation project along the 7.4-hectare shoreline of neighboring two barangays in Molo district.

Mabilog said the project has initial difficulties but he is sure it can be done with the cooperation of people living in the coastlines of Barangays North and South Baluarte and with the assistance of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
