That's the only remaining "informal settler colony" in Zone 4. Zone 3 is cleaned up. Zone 2 would need to remove the remaining settlers at Mansaya Creek in Lapuz. Zone 1 is all cleaned up...except for that small colony beside the old Panay Railways terminal, at the back of Muelle Loney Monument. I heard that there is something rising on that area. I'm not sure though what it is.The tributaries are another challenge indeed, and so is Batiano River.

![]() )[/QUOTE]Dungon Creek. Yes. This is quite a heavy load, in my opinion, since it has the most number of informal settlers and a major tributary to Iloilo River. How about Calajunan Creek which is near the dumpsite? My prayer/hope is that the efforts of the city government should be sustainable in the long run. Good thing, we still don't have issues on overcrowding problems (except for that part in Calumpang, Boulevard area though) I guess you know more about the dredging of Dungon River, @Zynet. Perhaps you may explain to us what you meant about "if the city government will 'complement.'"

It's time nga dumdumon naton c Nicholas Loney, He is The Father of the Philippine Sugar Industry! Say mo Mayor?
Nicholas Loney Recreational Park >>>-----> ASAP!!!!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() The Ilonggo hacienderos heritage houses ON A recent trip to Iloilo, my companions wondered why taipan Henry Sy, Sr. had opened three SM shopping malls plus a Save More Supermarket there. ![]() DON Emiliano Alunan Lizaress mansion Why not? After all, Iloilo is a major producer of rice, sugar and mango. It has one of the richest fishing grounds in the country and, thus, is the most logical site for the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center. Iloilo serves as the major port of entry of the Western Visayas region ably handling its foreign trade; and managing both the industrial and commercial activities of Panay. It is designated as one of the growth centers of the Philippines being identified as one among four pilot cities of the country under the Regional Cities Development Project. It was precisely Iloilos reputation for its rice production, in the first place, which brought it to the attention of the Spanish conquistadores in 1565. Early Spanish chroniclers noted that the inhabitants of Iloilo enjoyed a certain degree of civilization. By 1750, Iloilo gained repute for its remarkable, large-scale, commercial weaving industry. This development led to a concentration of the native population in the towns of Arevalo, Jaro, Molo and Oton. By the mid-19th century, Iloilos progressive, hand-loomed textile industry earned the province the title of Textile Centre of the Philippines. When Iloilo Port opened in 1855, international traders came to do business. Among the foreign businessmen was Nicholas Loney, the first Vice-Consul of Great Britain who landed on Iloilo soil in 1856. Mr. Loney financed and encouraged the cultivation of sugar cane through his firm, Loney, Ker & Co. He brought to Iloilo sugarcane seeds from Sumatra and sugar machinery from England and Scotland. The Englishman made the first shipments of sugar from Iloilo to Melbourne in 1859; and to Great Britain and China in 1863. Duly recognized as the Father of the Philippine Sugar Industry, it was unfortunate that Mr. Loney, by importing cheap cotton fabrics, consequently became the bane of Iloilos thriving weaving industry. Indeed, out of the ashes of the weaving industry in Panay, grew the seeds of the sugar industry... With the pronounced economic and social developments in 19th century Iloilo, came the rise of the native elite, the principalia, which included Iloilos hacienderos, traders, as well as the professionals, and the educated ilustrados. The lifestyle and aspiration of the enlightened 19th century principalia by then demanded a new type of dwelling, other than that of the natives payag or bahay kubo (nipa huts), befitting the Hispanized and educated ruling elites stature in society. ![]() Don Eugenio and Doņa Pacita Lopezs boat house Thus, the rise of the bahay-na-bato, which, in general, is described as a house with wooden legs and a stone skirt, a style of construction that makes the house a sure survivor of earthquakes. The countrys maestros de obra (master builders) were impressive for developing innovative methods and techniques in constructing smart housing in the form of these bahay-na-bato to deal with the countrys wet and dry season plus the occasional devastating earthquakes. The construction methods used for the bahay-na-bato were not so much based on structural calculations as they were on the experience developed over many years by the people who built them. Why such big houses? Well, the proud, native, feudal lords of Iloilo raised big families under one roof at that time. Not to mention the needed accommodations for house guests comprised of relatives, friends and businessmen, especially if the lord of the house figured in politics as well. Iloilos palatial dwellings tell of a golden era when hacienderos de azucar (sugar barons) spared no expense in the construction and furnishing of their homes. And sugar never tasted so sweet as in the magnificent homes -- complete with furniture imported from Europe and America brought directly by ships docking in Iloilos port -- of these hacienderos whose money, as the old-timers would describe, gina-pala kag gina-piko (dug up with spades and picks). Those were the days of the sweet life that Ilonggo sugar barons thought would never come to an end. As my 102-year-old grand aunt once said in the 1960s when the price of sugar in the world market plummeted: I never even imagined in my life that sugar would lose its sweetness someday. Life in Iloilo today is like living in a parallel universe, seamlessly moving between past and present. Every extant haciendero heritage house reaches out to provoke the viewers imagination about the lavish lifestyle of the rich, famous and privileged Ilonggos of yesteryears. I heeded its psychic call while there, fantasizing about what it would be like to call the Paris-educated architect Andres Luna de San Pedro (only child of Juan Luna)-designed mansion for the wealthy haciendero Don Emiliano Alunan Lizares, a home. the tributary is winding thru a highly urbanized density in the near future. it would be more difficult if they'll intervene later than sooner. Calumpang-Molo Blvd. which affect the Batiano River System can be "sweep" easier IMO. complement? would this mean the share of which the politicians affect the policy? or financial side?
