How were these terminals allocated? Because it seems that SkyTeam got the best deal on a terminal, besides those a T5?

I've no idea how they were allocated. But I suspect the various groups have been jockeying for position for some time now. If you remember there was an article published a few months ago, which various airlines including Singapore airlines and Lufthansa were bitching about how unfair it was that BA was getting T5 to itself. Which I thought was a bit rich considering how many other airlines dominate their own hub far more than BA does Heathrow. I suspect they have the best terminals on their home patch. This was probably part of their campaign to get BAA to comit to redeveloping the other terminals. Plus the idea of relocating airlines by alliances must have pleased quite a few. Being able to co locate like this outside your home patch must be pretty rare.

I suspect as far as the other air alliances go they are rather sanguine about T4. While it is better than T1,2 and 3. It is South of the Southern raunway, so planes going to and from the Northern runway has to wait to cross the Southern runway. Plus the central terminals will have better public transport links than T4 as trains/tubes will divide at CTA before either going on to T5 or T4, with the majority going on to T5. Besides if they are going to substantialy rebuild the other terminals then the problems of the central terminals will diminish.

This will be the largest enclosed building ever built in Britain - the interior space is simply vast:

It looks very nice. But Heathrow really needs since it is a very ugly and un-accomodating airport.

The renderings show the final design that is being built as we speak.

London is the world's busiest airport city (ie counting all city airports) and Heathrow is the world's busiest airport for international traffic but in total Heathrow is currently only the third busiest airpot in the world. However it could easily regain the number one spot after the completion of HT5.

I also don't have sympathy with people who live near airports, I have a friend who lives about 100 yards from Cardiff airports perimetre fence, and although obviously it is nothing like as busy as the London airports, the noise isn't too bad. It's no worse than living right next to a busy railway line (which I used to). And don't the airports compensate these people, and provide them with the latest sound proofing and stuff for free?.
Well, technically there is already a fourth London Airport, London Luton, which has expansion plans to increase traffic to 30mpa by 2030 (link)

And of cause there is already a 5th, but small airport, London City.

Generally, there are considered 5 international airports for London, but recently Southend on Sea has been advertising itself as London Southend Airport although as far as I know it's very small with the only scheduled flights to Jersey (does that count as international as it's not technically part of the UK but a crown dependancy)

Anyway, four major airports, 6 including the smaller ones, and generally recognized as 5 international airports.

My favouirte is London City, so perfectly located in central London and always really fast. For architecture, Stansted, this is not a giant airport, but it is certainly beautifully designed. Heathrow is currently an eyesore, although it is nicer once you go through customs.

Terminal 5 will be great, as I usually fly BA from Frankfurt to London, and if it is as they promise all BA flights to T5, then I will benifit - presuming I am still here in 2008!

Actually, in the case of Lufthansa, their hub is Frankfurt, Terminal 1. Terminal 2 is by far the more modern, and the best terminal of the two which I don't think Lufthansa use. Ironically, BA use T2 in Frankfurt.

So this would make two amazing terminals on my flights to London, which I do 4 or 5 times a year. Frankfurt T2 to London T5... looking forward to this

Yes, one option discussed in 2002 was for a brand new airport at Cliffe, due east of London in the Thames Estuary. This plan was described by some as "the single most environmentally destructive planning development the UK has ever seen", and the government decided instead to increase capacity at the existing airports in the south east.

Manston is a long way from Cliffe, at the south-eastern tip of Kent (closer to France than London).

That is a massive terminal, almost inhuman. But it's really very nice.
