Guangzhou - China: Wilkinson Eyre appointed to design twin towers

Guangzhou - China: Wilkinson Eyre appointed to design twin towers

(From today's BD magazine - paraphrasing slightly cos I've been in the pub)

London based double Stirling Prize winning architects Wilkinson Eyre have been commissioned to design the fourth tallest tower in the world in Guangzhou, with another twin likely to follow. At 432m they will be the tallest in mainland China with only Taipei 101, Petronas and the Sears tower being taller. The first tower alone has been budgetted at £411 million.

For the full story and a lovely render see this week's BD.

Oh.... and guess who might be working on the project

I like the design: simple yet effective.

Let's hope it won't turn out to be as boring as CITIC Plaza ;-)

More info at the official site here. < Click "projects" and then in "Guangzhou twin towers". Here you have more information and flash pics. They will be amazing!

Why does Emporis ignore this huge project?

:o
CITIC plaza is maybe my favourite skyscraper in the world. Why do you find it boring? It is so elegant!

Nice design! Together with the new 610m TV tower u/c and other supertalls Guangzhou will be one of the tallest cities in the world!

What will be their names?

Ok... a little bit more about the design for you before I head down the pub.

The form of the building basically takes a rounded triangular floorplan and gently tapers it towards the top. The triangular plan itself is a response to the climatic conditions in Guangzhou. As it's almost exactly on the Tropics, in midsummer the sun rises, travels and sets almost exactly on the east west axis. By employing a triangular plan, the tower places the minimum amount of facade facing directly east or west (the south facade is easy to shade from solar gain as it's always high angle sun that hits it)

The tapering form is all about finding an elegant form. Lots of models being made and passed around the table.

The structural solution is a solid core and external 'diagrid' structure, a very strong solution. It also adds a nice macro texture to such a tall building I think.

They're ok I suppose. I'm a little disappointed as I saw some renderings of the other proposals for the site at Urbanplanet.com and some of them were truly stunning. Still these are pretty good though .

(I'll try dig out a link to the proposals I saw if you like?)

There's a thread on the China Mainland section of the Asian forums on here if you like.

...and yes some of them I like a lot. I'm glad we won though

My personal taste in buildings is not the twirly Gehry way of doing things to be honest. I've kinda argued this on the UK forums a bit as it sometimes seems that the City of London is heading towards a menagerie of kerrazy forms. I don't personally feel the need to do Icons with a capital 'I' (he says talking about a 430m high skyscraper - cough) and although this is not 'MY' design, I do like it, I think it has a simple elegance that many other tall buildings in China have somehow missed prefering to opt for showy crassness..... I am very happy to be working on it now - fingers crossed for lots of site visits .... (it's perfectly fine if you don't like it though)

SWFC isn't finished yet, but is planned to be completed before the completion of Guangzhou Twin Towers. So Guangzhou Twin Towers will probably never experience to be ranked as No. 1 in China, but the possibilities is still there, as far as SWFC isn't completed.

Yeah I see your point actually....It's very nice having the really crazy designs to a degree....but some designs are abit OTT and if you start having them everywhere it'll start to look silly. Having said that a couple of those other proposals were damn impressive .

But I still like this design alot (probably my third or fourth favourite) I'm not too sure about the colour in those renderings though, I think the buildings might look better in reality. Either way, I hope you get to work on that'd be awesome :p. And you could keep us nice and up-to-date.

I actually quite like the twisting version. It's not as crazy as some other designs and think it actually fits well. It'd be a great set of landmark towers.

I think the first one's pretty good too. A simple but effective design.

I saw the other proposals too and have to say these are the best. Some of them were really too crazy (like the one based on a mobius strip, it would've been impossible to build aswell)

Yes it's very monumenal but also very communist especially with this great square or park??

This one is much much better maybe it's not so monumenat but I think it's better looks more commercial.
