All those nameless individuals who stood in silence with candles at the rubble of the Frauenkirche each February 13th. The dedicated historic preservationists who refused to yield to developers. The young and old who rallied against communism. Ronald Reagan. Helmut Kohl. The visionaries who dreamed that Dresden could be more than old photos. All those willing to donate to these construction projects. It's been a huge, integrated effort that needs to continue.

But it must've been a political decision at a local level?

I'd be interested to know that too. Unfortunately I haven't been to Dresden (yet) but this thread reminds me of Saint-Malo which was reduced to rubble in 1944. It too was completely rebuilt in the original style, although unlike Dresden it was done immediately in the aftermath of the war (officially completed in 1962).

St Malo is quite different from the original city. It was a mix of Half-timberings & tone houses, plus few "hotels particuliers" in classical styles. The complete city has been rebuilt in concrete with stone on the side of the street and of course, Slate roofs. Thoses buildings are declensions of the "hotels particuliers". Street have been moved, the plan is not really the same, no more little medieval streets, there are now squares and alleys between the streets and Inner courtyard
St Malo has been called a "moderate modernism" so people weren't too lost, and soon it has been called a "historical reconstruction", then an "identical reconstruction". When you walk in the street you can easily see the difference, as the 50's french style is quite present in the facades.
Nevertheless, there as been a great work done then, knowing they reused most of the stones from the old buildings.

(Excuse my french // If the photos are a problem let me know, I'll remove them )

Reconstructed:

Old part of the city:

Also, France received almost twice as much Marshall Plan aid than Germany, but had far less rebuilding to accomplish. And with Dresden in the soviet zone, the oppportunity to accumulate the capital needed to rebuild Dresden was almost non existent, not to mention St Malo, while heavily damaged, was a much smaller project than that of Dresden.

Obviously! Many cities have been destroyed in France, but no one was the size of Berlin for example. In France, past 1952, a quite important part of the budget of the MRU (ministry of reconstruction & urbanism) went into the country colonial wars (In Brest you can tell wich part has been reconstructed before, and vice versa). Finally Dresden is probably lucky, as that there is no "urge" to reconstruct now, so the work can be done right - even known that the soviets were quite good at reconstruct an historic place, better than the french for sure (the old Warsaw is quite amazing).

^ Are you implying the Russians reconstructed Warsaw's old town?

Anyway, it's interesting, but this discussion doesn't belong here. You're free to open a new thread.
Stick to Dresden here please. Thanks.

The only thing the Russians re-constructed properly was St. Petersburg. Every other city in the Soviet Union was just slopped back together with commie blocks and hideous post modern government buildings.

are there any renders of Quartier VIII?

I searched on the architects webpage but it's completly focused on his "creative modern masterpiece" (the little quasi-modern part that ruins the quartier)
