Beautiful weather for Dresden's beautiful main square right now.

The part recently finished at Rampische Strasse (Quartier II-2) is the narrow alley between "Frauenkirche" and "Quartier III" leading to the Elbe river in this panorama.

The city council now examines plans to rebuild the Hotel Stadt Rom, which was located here (yellow):

Without the building there is an ugly hole on the Neumarkt, but as you can see, it doesn't make a lot of sense to build it until you partly level the block from the 60s. Interestingly the GHD, the society behind the idea to rebuild the square, isn't to keen to remove this block, probably out of fear the city council would see it as a chance to level all Commie blocks and replace it with even more monotone investors architecture.
Anyway, Hotel Stadt Rom before the war:

A reconstruction with the Commie blocks intact would look like this:

And if the Commie block would be removed the reconstructed street could look like this:

Thank you, Karasek. Count me in to the people that aren't too fond of demolishing the "commieblocks" (they're a lot better than Plattenbauten), since there's nothing acceptable to expect as a replacement. We'll have to wait for a better city administration or even a new era of urban planning in Dresden.

Apart from that, Hotel Stadt Rom should be reconstructed asap. Without it, the Neumarkt is just floating, disharmonic open space.

By the by, any idea what happened to the Sempersche Ladenfront? Is it going to be reconstructed now?

Personally I want all the commie blocks demolished and replaced with the original buildings. That Kulturpalast building or whatever it's called is enough for communist "architecture".
