Another item to keep in mind for all of us who object to some of the modernist intrusions into the Neumarkt reconstruction....the building owners will in all likelihood sell the properties at some point. Hopefully, any buyers will take the time and energy to redo the facades more in keeping with the area's baroque and renaissance themes. In fact, the facades will be easy to change especially since, even the modernists, held generally true to the classic exterior shape of the originals.

The modern building are quite nice in my opinion, they bring variety to the area!

^ Nice comparison

I could indeed do without this kind of "variety" the modernist junk adds to the Neumarkt area.
Baroque architecture is all about beautiful harmony, not disturbing contrasts.

There are plenty of sites around Dresden where the modernists can have their fun. Even if I was an ardent admirer of modernist architecture, I hope that I would still be able to see the Neumarkt project in the proper context, and have the sense and good taste (or manners?) to let it be developed in a coherent way.

I wasn't mocking Skyscraperer, just the out-of-place buildings. No offense intended.

Cool - thanks, glad all's well. back to the issue, I really wish they'd let the Neumarkt be free of modernist architecture. So many other places for it! This is a great site for projects across town:

A 21st century building is hardly out of place in a 21st century city.

But it's a 18th century city centre.

Hmmmm. Is a piece by Justin Bieber out of place during a Beethoven concert?

There are plenty of other places in this '21st century city' to build them. Why dilute (or even pollute) an expensive, historically significant reconstruction project? What if 'La Gioconda' had been damaged, and needed the lower half replaced? Since it IS the 21st century, would it be acceptable for the restorers paint an iPhone in her hands?

Having Bieber in a Beethoven consert spoils the whole thing, but having only a few modern buildings in Dresden doesn't...

No. Just NO. You obviously have no idea, Skyscraperer. First telling us it's a good thing they've torn down Zerbst Castle and now modernist buildings would be no threat to Dresden's old town.

Just a friendly advice, if you don't know any of the details concerning European classic architecture, it's better for you to stay out of such kinds of discussions.
