Why cant we do something at least like this in Bucharest. Of course there are some reconsolidations and renovation works, but there are whole missing historical buildings...

I wouldn't say that. The only thing wrong with it, IMO, is that there are too many windows in the facade. If they were more evenly spaced then it would've given the facade more appeal, but I still think it's a perfectly attractive building and 99% better than most other things built in Dresden since 1945.

That is a matter of taste.

Taste regarding modernist architecture aside, my opinion regarding this area of Dresden is that modernist buildings belong outside of it. They simply don't belong there, any more then a baroque palace belongs in Shanghai or Dubai.

I agree, I'm tired of this elitist approach to conservation that only haughty conservators understands. Let's rebuild cities that human beings and the average European can relate to, that speak to our hearts and not just that stuffy cob-webbed cerebrums of conservators. Why can't we have old Dresden or Warsaw back, who says and why?!

These "elitist" approaches are there for a reason and that is to keep the cultural value of a building in check through an authentic conservation program. The problem of populist ways is always kitsch, since its inception during the Industrial Revoultion. Imagine the Sistine Chapel, if it were in ruins today and then "wannabe conservators" try to reconstruct it, do you think they could bring back the artistic value of Michaelangelo's frescoes?

And why did you mention Warsaw? They have been highly praised for the level of authenticity of the Old Town's postwar reconstruction. And now, Warsaw Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cultural value of the place is restored once more for all people to see and relate. Was Warsaw DISNEYFIED? I don't think so.

What I mean is that conservators should bow to public pressure in special circumstances like Dresden and reconstruct more of the city people long for to rebuild that collective memory. Warsaw was very well rebuilt but people want to see even more rebuilt, the conservator is resisting this largely. Populism does not need to be kitsch, conservators would still oversee a credible reconstruction.

That is an opinion that bears the type of arrogance suggested in the previous post. And totally misses the point that was put forth which was that the popular desire for rebuilding the pre 1945 Dresden (and Warsaw) ought not be suppressed by elitists who would rather bite off their noses to spite their faces than yield to 21st century requirements for such reconstructions.

Why not? Surely it all depends on the building and not style.

That modern building at the corner seems to turn out way better than expected.

Indeed, it's not trying to be a masterpiece, like some buildings in there.

I agree, it's a piece of crap.
Being just in the corner and visible from 2 perspectives it should be one of the bests.

Yes...I agree, too! The building seems to be better than expected.............................................................................and it's crap!

No, seriously...I think that building is a nice mix between old and modern. It would be nicer if it wasn't a corner building but it's not bad at all!
