What's also somewhat ironic about the modernist structures that attempt to embrace some sort of classic look/shape and seem to try to blend with the original appearance of the city is that such a non-ornamented, stark "modern" look actually mimics much of the Hitlerian buildings. In a Germany that attempts to ban and/or hide everything Hitlerian, seems funny...while most label it Stalinist.

I dont like that one on the corner that much... It would be by far better to add a litlle ornamentation... But its pleasant.

Fantastic Dresden.

Can someone please provide a map or diagram of some sort that shows what has been done from the original plan, and what intends to be done? Thanks.

That's great. Danke Tiaren.

seems like a lot has been done, but there's much more as well, judging by the orange sectors.

OMG, why are those two buildings such a problem next to Wilstdruffer St.

They must be torn down!

I think I might have asked this before but I seem to have forgotten the specifics so I'll ask again: Do the local authorities give any specific incentives for investors to come and rebuild these buildings? (tax breaks etc.)

They were recently renovated, and not on the chopping block any time soon. I dearly wish that they were!

Ooo, very bad location for this kind of architecture... But street is narrow, on the other side....

Where is it exactly?

Isn't this the facade which will get some embossment depicting a dancer (or something)?

ON the contrary. I also think the work is superbly done in term of its quality, but it DOES look fake from a style point of view.
But it is better than nothing and since authenticity is impossible so it should continue.

Kampflamm - great pictures as always. You have a talent.

I should perhaps point out that these pics aren't mine.

Just visited Dresden and it triggers a few thoughts...

1) First, it's a great place to go for a weekend trip. I've visited quite a bit of Germany, and it's one of the nicest places I've been there. Please do go.

2) Seeing how people react to newly built beautiful buildings is a bit of a revelation. It's as though some guy has been lying to you all your life about how we can't build beautiful cities any more, and then you find out that actually, it's quite easy if you put your mind to it.

3) A lot of Dresden beyond the historic centre is being rebuilt with the usual bland modern rubbish you see in the rest of the world, and would be easy to mistake for Manchester or Ohio or Berlin. To give just one example, we visited the Kreuzkirche which sits on the north east corner of a square surrounded by new buildings (on Kramergasse etc.). Google street view only shows a couple of the buildings, but you get the idea. We sat in this ugly square and thought how shameful it is that even in this city, bland modernity is the default.

Given how much people like buildings to have detail, character, grace and proportion, why do modern architects persist in denying them these things?

I am a fan of a handful of modern buildings with unusual, beautiful structures, but most of what goes up is just an exercise in box building.

It didn't need to be like this. Beautiful cities could have been the norm. Now we go on holiday to places which are lucky enough to have held on to their old (i.e. beautiful) buildings. Wouldn't it be nice if where we lived was beautiful too?
