Technically everything they are building, bar the main cultural buildings, are modern reconstructions. What you actually have are modern spec concrete boxes with wholly modern interiors, dressed in pastiche facades very much like Disney Land. The Neumarkt is in effect a stage set for the tourists, filled with tourist facilities.

This is simply not true! There is even a retirement home at the Neumarkt!

Ignore him, probably thinks the same of the government buildings complex in Washington DC (by copying greek-roman architecture) or the fact that japanese shinto temples are rebuild again and again due to their materials...

I got similar discussions (not speaking of the Foro Romano "park" but more unknown buildings) with an italian (from Rome) architect until I said the following:

"So, you preffer to maintain a huge area of your city with useless and daily ignored destroyed remains, all of them decaying fastly to environmental erosion, of well documented buildings than restore and rebuild them respectfully and give them a new use?"

She changed the subject after that, and a few months later she explained with illusion the reconstrucion of La Fenice Theater in Venice... I think that is just a taboo to overcome for some people

Guys...Have been to Dresden at all? The fact they are using the same street pattern with the fact of the city has such an historical sense to it, does not make it Disneyland at all. The modern buildings are to scale and form a beautiful street scape. There are plenty of historical building all around Dresden. Perhaps you prefer an empty lot that stood there for 65 years. Do you think it feasible to reconstruct every building to the standard of 200 years ago? That will never happen. When you go to Dresden, you will be awestruck by what is going on there. The people, the food, the drink, the scenery, the streets, the reconstructions.......Awesome.

The difference is they'll be authentic from the outside. Many truly old building have original facades but have had their interiors completely gutted several times over, and nobody complains about them.

Yes, it's true that there's something uncomfortably false about "old" buildings that aren't really old, but they are still reconstructions. They aren't building fairytale castles or thatched cottages over an old cattle market and pretending that's what use to be there.

Nobody complains about bombed out buildings that were rebuilt in 1951 being "Disneyfied", so what the difference if they were rebuilt in 2011?

I like the two reconstructions which are very nice, but the courtyard is very 'modern'. They could've done instead of the open modern balconies, balconies in historical style and some nice fence around it. No big deal. Sad that they won't rebuild the courtyard in historical style......

Cool...although it's kind of weird to see the inscription "lived and worked in this house".

Amazing how they kept all the small bits and pieces of their bombed out heritage - especially regarding the hell they lived in in the post war years.

One should think the people there had other things to concern about than collecting bits of ornaments and sculptures. This proves only that the Germans are true people of culture.

Interesting point. I think that, somewhere in the pages and pages of this thread, we discussed how run-down and crowded European inner cities had become, so claustrophobic and airless, and how to many the destruction of them was an opportunity to start fresh. For many, this was the initial reaction to the footprints of World War 2.

Pöppelmann's looking pretty good. All new though. But they incorporated the old parts as well, didn't they?

No, they will showcase the original fragments in the hotel lobby. Just like they did with the statue of the Salomonis Apotheke.
