Honestly, it's not that terrible. I've seen it and it had a useful purpose (...I went to the bathroom).

I wish my city too one day will get rid of socialistic crap and rebuild lost historical buildings instead...
About half of Vilnius' old town was lost in war and during soviet reconstructions...
Go Dresden!

The reconstruction looks very nice. Sometimes a bit too clean but that will change in a while. Though the Kulturpalast doesn't really fit in its new pseudo historical surroundings, i'm glad they don't destroy it. It is a nice peace of modernist architecture which should be preserved. There are better candidates in this area for demolition.

At that place where the white columns are (bottom centre of the photo), once stood the Sophienkirche, by the way.

Are there plans to rebuild the Sophienkirche? It says on wiki that there are fragments of the structure in the catacombs under Brühl's Terrace.

A building was partially built on its original location so only a miracle would bring Sophienkirche back now...

Go Dresden!
Vilnius did some great jobs too, like the reconstruction of the castle behind the Cathedral and they are going to rebuild the Jewish Quarter with Synagoge

Rebuilding of Jewish Quarter with Synagogue would be great but is unlikely in at least 20 years...

Perhaps the city could purchase the property and then demolish it?

A reconstruction of the Sophienkirche can also be placed a few meter to the west, so the new building doesn't have to be destroyed. The Potsplatz looks big enough for even 3 churches. Why should we care about the original place? The church itself is also a 'fake' reconstruction, so why even care about a place? It would be a wast of money to demolish the newer building on the corner for a reconstructed bulding which will be only used as some kind of an historical eye-catcher for tourists, just facade without a further purpose.

Who wants to pay for something like this anyway? Does anyone know how much it costs to reconstruct a gothic church (with all the hours of craftmanship in it)?

And if they reconstruct Sophienkirche the question is,if the interior will be modern or will be like it was before destruction? It is hard to reconstruct interior like that, isn't it?

Often these kind of things are financed to an extent by donations both from individuals and companies.

Fake reconstruction? What do you mean?

I don't think it would be a waste. It was a beautiful church, and I think its reconstruction would contribute to the restoration of the cityscape.

Besides, there are many different uses for structures, it doesn't have to be a church or museum, hell, it could even have apartments inside or a restaurant!

They could turn it into a library/bookstore like this church in Maastricht. From a house of ignorance, it can be turned into a house of knowledge.
