I know that Dresden can never be fully restored - but the work that has been done is absolutely wonderful. And when all of this is completed it will be one of the world's most beautiful cities again, at least in the Aldstadt.

When I visited Dresden for the first time, just after the Frauenkirche was completed, I saw the Elbe panorama for the first time from across the Augustus bridge against a December sky.

It was one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. Ever.

I see they've alreay planted a tree in the small platz at the tip of Rampische Str. As a tree person, their placement is important. Not sure it's a good idea to place a tree that interrupts the view of this most important area.

TimothyR...that is the Police Station. It was one of the few in the area that survived the bombing enough to be repaired, generally.

I agree. Walking across the bridge towards the Hofkirche and Georgentor...it was odd, something that I've never really felt before when visiting a city. Maybe it was cause I had been following Dresden and its reconstruction online for such a long time that it was just special to finally see it firsthand. Still, that assortment of fantastic architecture really evoked some sort of emotional response.

How the quarter will look most likey:

The good news is, that the city council wants that Gottfried Semper's store windows will be restored. The bad news is, that the city has no influence on the restoration of the facade at the Au Petit Bazar Building. This lot is owned by Günter Blobel, a strong supporter of the reconstruction at Neumarkt. But it's not clear yet, if he favours a restoration of the building how it was destroyed in 1945 or if he prefers an older baroque version.

Either way, it's awesome. If we think back to what was initially planed in this particular spot with the massive modern Gewandhaus and the long, hard struggle against it... to all those who fought for a fully reconstructed Neumarkt.

Wasn't the pre-war structure much more ornate with architectural sculpture and more?

I'd be happy even with the simplified baroque version.

What should we make of this news bulletin?

http://www.neumarkt-dresden.de/pdf-d...09.03.13_2.pdf

So there won't be any "Ladenzeile"?
