I'd like to emerge from the shadows of lurk mode for just a minute to offer my profuse thanks to Kampflamm for his always fascinating pics.

Just curious, does anyone know why the Kulturpalast isn't being razed when so much effort is going into restoring the baroque glory of the Neumarkt. I mean, it sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb, detracting from the buildings surrounding it (just as the reconstructed Berlin Schloss will enhance the buildings surrounding it!).

You have to understand that there are still plenty of Post-Communists around in East Germany. The Kulturpalast is regarded as some piece of GDR-heritgage by them...similar to the Palast der Republik in Berlin where PDS/Leftists tried to do everything to stop it from being demolished and now they're still trying everything to stop the castle from being reconstructed.

Anyway...some more pics

Old vs new...contrast couldn't be any clearer

We really can't deny that Lev Rudnev had more taste than most architects today.

I have to give it to Germans - they knew how to build and they know how to rebuild. Really beautiful place and very good pictures. By the way we have a thread about rebuilding old buildings in Russian section - do you mind if I use your pictures as a good example of how things supposed to be done?

The Elbfront of Dresden is the most beautiful and spectacular skyline of historic architecture I know! *__*

Is the commieblock between the 2 cupolas on the left still there, or has it already been demolished?

I'd say it's still there since it seems to be a recent picture.

More from the Neumarkt:

Unfortunately it still stands right there. Only the other one next to it had been demolished some quarters ago. I hope they also give the finishing stroke to this one after all...
