Why has this wonderful thread been turned into a foolish and irrelevant argument? This is about Dresden.

Please - someone with authority needs to clean this up.

The debate about Libeskind's addition to the Military History Museum in Dresden is hardly irrelevant. A few of us have already requested that another thread be opened.

In general or about that one in Dresden? I guess not very much. They said that they had to learn the technique completely new because such a vault was not built since the late gothic period which means it was also not reused in the neogothic historicism style.

The rest around the «Inner City» are unfortunately commieblocks, wasteland and cheap new stuff.

I never been there and now I am a bit disappointed. Are you saying it will never look like this ( see below ) again ?

Can someone explain which parts of the city in the pic below will not be rebuilt ?

Apart from the church with Gothic spires next to the Zwinger, this view has been completely restored again.

Well, at first they looked at some still existing vaults of this kind. Most of them are in Saxony, Bohemia, Bavaria and Austria. For example the St. Annenkirche in Annaberg-Buchholz or the Vladislav Hall in Prague. There exists a copperplate print from 1676. The rest was try out, mathematics and calculation.

This view mainly already exists. Just google Dresden, there are dozens of pictures from the Elbe panorama.

Look at that...

I wasn't fully aware of the factthat the bombings didn't completely destroyed Sophienkirche, but the Commies did it... again >:-(

I discovered this image while doing some research regarding the vault. These images give an idea of how the architects and the vault itself worked.

The right segment of the circular-arch in the last picture does not seem quite succinctly.

I think it was part of some dumbass "arts" project (says "views behind the facades" on that piece of tarp) which removed the outermost layers of a couple of buildings. Pointless waste of money if you ask me.

I love this project so much but I just can never get passed the stupid ass modern crap in this project. Dresden and every bombed out city is already covered with disgusting soulless modern shit, so why did they feel the need to ruin this with putting crap in between well done historic reconstructions? Nobody wanted the modern crap, seriously, has there been anyone ever to say that they were glad they put the modern schlock in this? They dropped the ball big time.

I agree: the Neumarkt should be a no-modernism zone. Whether one "likes" or "loathes" modernist architecture is spectacularly irrelevant. As you said, there is plenty of space outside the area in question for such endeavors, and their inclusion here is inappropriate and dilutes the impact of the reconstruction.

I'm having a little trouble following the train of thought here. Are you saying that local authorities in Dresden are now comfortable allowing a modernistic building to be included in the Neumarkt reconstruction? If so, where and what is it supposed to be? Including something like that in a reconstructed period area seems really stupid.

What are you talking about? Can't you see they've already put tons of modernistic schlock in this project already.
