What is sad in this particular case is that, most likely, the construction cost wouldn't even be higher if they were to be built according to the original design. The original buildings had hardly any ornaments...

Sadly, they are going to restore at least one those stalinist buildings along Wilsdruffer-Straße.

The executive floors of this apartment building on Wilsdruffer road will be renovated and modernized.
Hopefully the renovation is only a temporary solution and that this building will eventually be demolished and replaced with something more suitable.

I'm guessing modern designs are chosen instead of reconstructing bland historic buildings? So I'm not buying that it's so much cheaper.

I'm against reconstructing just the 'best of Neumarkt'. The blander buildings are needed as well to tie up the urban room.

The ones without many decorative features, such as the original buildings where these modern ugly things are going. The historical buildings, while not masterpieces, certainly are more graceful and should be rebuilt instead.

Oh I thought you were trying to say these abominations are more worthy than ugly historic buildings, my bad.

If the lipstick were Chanel or YSL, the pig might look acceptable. But, the renovation won't even be lipstick; more like a handkerchief around the neck of a pig in slop. Tragic.

Those are the basements of the buildings which were destroyed during WWII. I am not sure but yes I think they are incorporated in the foundations of the new buildings.

Strange effect. Frauenkirche definitely looks bigger at the old photo while the corner building seems pretty the same. Some kind of optical illusion? Or is it just a slight alteration of a point of view?

It looks like both photographs were taken from about the same spot and from about the same angle, so it's most likely due to different lenses being used. Odd, too: the roof in the old photo looks like it leans too far right, the newer one, too far left.
