This is going to be a very interesting quarter. It brings the urban density of the old city back and it mixes old and new.

Agree 100 percent. Why not rebuild like in Warsaw or Gdansk? In Franfurt the same sh.. happens. Build 500 meter times 500 meter and leave the new architecture outside the altstadt.

I dearly wish that modernist architects would leave the Neumarkt alone, and just go play with their glass and Legos elsewhere. It's a big city with plenty of open spaces and deteriorating, post WW2 blocks of banality just aching to be put out of their crumbling misery and replaced with shiny, new eco-friendly housing.
BUT
that's not going to happen.
SO
I keep reminding myself that the fact that this reconstruction is happening at ALL seems miraculous. In 1983, when I first became interested in Dresden's history and it's pre-1900 architecture, it seemed to be an impossible dream.

I'll give you a hint:
guilt. (and shame, propably)
there are some people who really seem to believe that the short man from austria will rise again if we rebuild our cities as they were...

The actual reason is even more simple and superficial. Modernist architects/planners/developers/politicians have a far more powerful lobby in Germany (and Europe/the world in general) than the friends of classical/reconstructions. That's about it.

And in all fear free frankness, this 'brainwashing' of German psyche after 70 years of penance and payback could be seen as a weakness of integrity rather than strength. All nations make and have made big mistakes, some huge. But comes the time to shed the shackles of past generations and join the front seat of world society with confidence and pride, including proud aspects of former history and culture.

The old European question "What are going to do with Germany?" has been replaced by "What would we do without Germany?"

Great! Better now than never. The real test will be to see when some of the "good" things (1 or 2?) se Fuhrer did will be comfortably mentioned without causing a stir. That will not be easy; even the more casual and open American society can't bring itself to comment anything good about President Nixon, and he was just a bad liar.

Hi; Does anyone have information on when Quartier 6, the Hotel Stadt Rom, and the Hoym Palace will start construction?

There would be no cars, no TVs, no computers, no humpahumpa and no Dresden!
And no Wunderbar either.
