In total, of course. Munich's old town was destroyed to about 90% too.

And if you are in Munich it is fairly clear that it was utterly devastated by the war. But what is also clear is that Munich was conservative and insisted on rebuilding the city in the idea of what had perished, not as copies of the old but in the dimensions and urban layout of the old. Unlike progressive Stuttgart that rebuilt a "modern" city with city highways right through the centre etc.

Dresden was more in line with Stuttgart but of course, as a socialist city the focus was more on commie blocks.

A very good example: These houses are houses of type number three. That means no reconstruction in total, including interior walls like number one houses. Or number two houses, facade only reconstructions.

#3 buildings can be build the way the investor likes. Or supposed to like.

Those three pictures show the same plot. On the right hand side You see what the investor likes to go up on that plot. On the left hand side you can see what that design committee likes to go up. "They" are modern architects afraid Japanese Tourists could think Germany is from Yesterday. Or so I guess . In the middle picture "they" meet in the middle. The investor Mr Kimmerle likes to build the right hand one. But that committee putting stones in his way. To make the construction more expansive "they" demand something stupid. In this case he is`t permitted to put windows in that open! The condos lose thousands of Euros value each! He can insist on baroque style witch will take another year or so to clear, since the roles of that committee are made up. "They" can`t force him. They fake the rules. But they can make his life miserable! If he looses one or two years he makes no many. He could win. The rules of that committee are made up. Or he builds what they want and gets permission right away! Mr. Kimmerle came forward in a German speaking thread and explained this to me. Other investors had the same story.

And now GOOD NEWS.

I like to talk about Mr G. Blobel He lives in New York. He runs Friends of Dresden. And he likes to donate money. He donated already to the Frauen church reconstruction. Now Friends of Dresden has ordered a software firm
the create 3-d pictures and entire maps of Potsdam and Dresden from different times! Really cool.

But what drives me happy is that he owns plots of land at key locations shown above. He dose`t need to build he said. The plots are #3 plots. So therefore, he expects that planing and design committee to force him to build modern.
Ha ha ha..... I love what comes next...... If they won`t let him do that....... Neumarket will not be.... finished! And all the bad media about it could hurt that major maybe..... Well, I like me... and Mr Blobel!!

Is Dresden seeing an increase in tourism? How is the local economy doing? Is it attracting new residents?

Yes. Dresden has had population growth for a good few years now, it is the third fastest growing city in Germany after Munich and Potsdam. This is not just from people moving from other parts of Germany into Dresden, but also because Dresden has the highest fertility rate of any German city and this is rising quite fast.

So glad to read this. Perhaps more demand for housing, shops, services in central Dresden!

Fantastic pictures indeed. There is hope for mankind when there is room for these reconstructions.

As I mentioned before, there are more castles under renovation or complete reconstruction.

This is Schloss Pillnitz. It has finally been finished after years of neglect! Last works are still undergoing. Pictures from this summer. I have asked Mr Reinhard Jentsch to use his pictures.

I'ts a BIJOU. Don't miss to visit it when in Dresden. I've seen it just after re-union, and it was also wonderful even if neglected.

As it is being renovated, this box is going to stay, for many more decades, the least. We can only hope that other buildings will hide it as good as possible from at least 3 sides.

I quite like it. Yes it may be in the wrong place but the building itself seems fine. What are they doing to it with the refurb?

AGAIN!! YES, this building is going to stay, like it or not (I personally like it) and YES it is going to be completely hidden away from the reconstructed Neumarkt, since it is going to be surrounded almost entirely by the reconstructed quarters. HAPPY NOW?

Communists has committed 2 kinds of crimes:

1 - against humanity;

2 - against architecture!
