Look at the photos above. You already have a signficant part of your very beautiful city back.

I know it is only a part. But those scenes are quite magnificent and should make anyone rejoice.

I look at these pictures of the rebuilt sections and think how interesting it would be if a surviving resident of the destroyed Altstadt could move back into his or her rebuilt apartment in one of the new buildings, and look out of the same windows at the same vistas he or she remembers from childhood. It's not outside the realm of possibility, although the returning resident would be 70 years older now.

At the dedication ceremonies of the Frauenkirche in 2005, I met a woman who had been Confirmed at the church prior to the war. Her son told me that she had lost everything--home, city, family, husband--except for him and he was a born in 1944. He said there were no words in English to express the emotion she (and he) felt at witnessing the miracle of freedom and the reconstruction. She burst into tears when the massive organ belted out the Martin Luther hymn "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" to begin the event.

Wouldn't it be fun to all meet in person in Dresden to carry on the conversation within the environment? Few threads/topics engender such a high level of yearning.

The reconstuction, regardless all the imperfections, looks stunning. Excellent result so far.

This is an interesting project. I don't fully agree with the concept of constructing 'old' buildings but at the same time i do think its quite symbolic for Dresden to have its historic core re-built. I will look forward to updates on this project.

IMO, it's not bad to construct "old" buildings as long as they are reconstructions. It would be weird to build thousands of completely new baroque buildings that were never there, but since these WERE there and they were replaced by something inferior, we have every right to bring them back from oblivion. About the authenticity of those reconstructions, I find them completely "true" since the building's message doesn't depend on the material that was used for construction, but its design and beauty.

Generally agree but we see a lot of former architectural styles being used in completely new construction, particularly residential. Tons of Prairie Style and Craftsman Style homes being built new. And commercial is also reaching back to former styles with the use of classic columns, exterior ornamentations, etc. All new. If Dresden were to build a new housing project on the outskirts of town to look like the former Wilhelmine core of Johannstadt, I'd be thrilled.

Yeah, it's good to have diversity in architecture. Not everything has to be made of glass and steel, but we should know where are limits for constructing in older styles because it can become disrespectful for old buildings that are already there. But yes, it would be awesome to have few "old-style" or even postmodern neighbourhoods here and there.

Sorry, it is off topic, but have to ask sane people...why did the Moscow skyline daily banner get stopped?
