Are the dark blocks on the cathedral original stones? It looks a little odd given that the rest is so spanking new. I suppose they want to use the original stonewrk where they can. I am thilled to see a European city that was destroyed in the war being rebuilt in the traditional style. Poland did a lot of this as well. There are places in Britain that could really benefit from this approach.

Yes the black parts are the original stone ... but the color is a natural occurence, the church was all black before it was destroyed and the new church will also change color to a dark black over several genations - long after we are all dead

It's done... The lady is back

On Sunday Dresden will celebrate the reopening of the Frauenkirche more than 250 years after the first opening. The german TV channel ZDF will broadcast the ceremony.

The reconstruction wouldn't have been possible without the help from all over the word and especially from the UK. Brithish Dresden Trust chairman Alan Russell and the Queen helped alot to realize the reconstruction.

Dresden is starting to look great once again. I dont know why but it was always one of my favorite cities in Germany.

Awesome project! Sure it looks a bit too "new" and artificial, but I think once it's all finished, it will look really good.

The church is amazingly beautiful!

A ceremony is being held in the German city of Dresden to consecrate the Church of our Lady which was destroyed by Allied bombing during World War II.

The charred remains of the Frauenkirche were left for decades by East Germany's communist authorities.

Its reconstruction began after German reunification, partly financed by private donors in Britain and the US.

Sunday's ceremony is being attended by representatives from around the world - including the Duke of Kent.

The baroque sandstone dome of the reconstructed Frauenkirche dominates the Dresden skyline, and now the church is being consecrated.

It is the end of a story that began on a cold night in February 1945, when Allied bombers carried out one of the most notorious air raids of World War II.

So how are things looking around the Neumarkt? Did they get rid of that horrid police building? And what about the Hilton or whatever -- it's far from a beauty & has no business in the vicinity of the Frauenkirche.

The Police buildings was demolished, the Hilton's still there, as you can see in this pic. It's far from being a beauty but compared to other GDR buildings (yes it was built before 1990) it looks acceptable.

The part (behind the tower of the Frauenkirche) of the "Quartier 3" project, shown by Kampflamm in his previous post will look like this.

Hello Kampflamm!

Your photos are really good

But I was wondering, the new lampposts, are they totally new? And why didn't they reproduce the old lampposts?

And also, have they reconstructed all the buldings at the Neumarkt? Because if I compare som eof the old and new pictures, I notice that there's one or two buildings missing.. Warum ?
