A lot of work still needs to be done but I'm pleasantly surprised. All of those modernists who speak out against reconstructions should visit that square and actually talk to the people.
Even some of the modern buildings look halfway decent Not yet finished ![]() ![]()

Incredible. Just curious...that frieze to the right in the photo I believe, which I believe is a mosaic: what does it depict? Just curious. |

It's called the "Fürstenzug" and it shows of all saxon regents. This fresco was made between 1872 – 1876 by W. Walther. In 1907 the porcelain manufacture of Meissen transferred the painting on 24,000 little porcelain tiles to resist weathering. With a length of 102 meters and a height of 10 meters it is world’s biggest porcelain mosaic.

Were those concessions to contemporary architecture necessary ? It looks cheap.

@Giri, sad to say, that those concessions are necessary right now... And yes, those modernist buildings are pretty ugly. But future generations might be able to create real beauty again. There is always hope.

![]() I like these modern buildings very much. I see absolutely nothing ugly in them. They have that old style sturdyness (looking like a stone building). ![]() ![]() ![]() That white building reminds me very much of Adolf Loos building (1910) in Vienna's Michaelerplatz which also has it's fare share of baroque architecture. Quite similar in style. Last edited by satama; April 28th, 2006 at 02:21 AM. |

Considering this map I made my map of Quartiers using Google Earth. The map is quite old (2003 - my estimate) and you can see how each Quartier looked before reconstructions. ![]() Q I: Frauenkirche is on the right, still under reconstruction. ![]() Q II ![]() Q III: Still, there is old DDR-police bulding on the right of the pic. It is demolished in 2005. ![]() Police building again. ![]() Q IV: Today, here is Hotel de Saxe ![]() Q V ![]() Q VI: On the right you can see Neumarkt with preserved old bricks. ![]() Q VII: Which this building represent? ![]() ![]() Q VII ![]()
