I thought I had seen some earlier photos where it looked like they had kept and repaired the old fondations and built the new building on top of them. But I could be wrong.

If you're talking about Quartier VIII next to the residence castle, they'll keep those and integrate what's left.
Some vine cellar for the hotel or something.

Photo of that quarter, some remains in front of the castle (Residenzschloss):

Thanks erbse.

I think they should keep every bit of cellar they find. It's sad though, to see them, the roots of buildings that had such a catastrophic end.

I can't believe how well the Royal Castle has turned out. It's looking truly magnificent.

At least the ruins weren't demolished!

It's a truly remarkable restoration. If we destroy our history then we destroy a little bit of ourselves. It's part of Dresden's history and Germany's history, but as a European I feel as though it's part of my history too.

I can only admire the people who have fought to get these places restored and reconstructed.

Do they have one at the Neumarkt as well? It would be predestined for such a market, even though so is the Altmarkt.

Great photos Kampflamm! Is it expensive to visit Dresden in the winter? I'd like to check it out in the future!
