I agree that the alternatives are better than the modern mediocrity, but considerably less attractive than what was there pre-1945. So, I ask again, and in perpetuity: if you are rebuilding for the sake of aesthetics and harmony, why not go barock?

It seems that, in general, Dresdners themselves want historic reproductions and outsiders want the modern "designs". Is this accurate?

It's not the "outsiders" who want modern crap, but the city council, investors and strange commissions.

"Outsiders" (from all over Germany and the world) were the ones who made the Frauenkirche reconstruction possible - through donations. And "outsiders" are the ones fighting for a historical Neumarkt against any opposition, together with Dresdners aware of their history.

Ja, "the projects still going". Isn't that more than obvious?

But why? Why does the council want such crap in their city?

(although if German councils are anything like English councils then I can understand why - they're filled with small-minded, rancid little people)

Small-minded, irrational, snotty, bullheaded modernist architects and councils, that exactly is the point. It's different from city to city though, it's a whole diff. situation in Potsdam, Berlin or Frankfurt for instance.

Dresden city council is ridiculing itself, there is an advisory council for the planning at Neumarkt that wants to push modernist crap through. They're doing their utmost to sabotage the result of a successful historical Neumarkt. Existential fear is plagueing them (esp. the architects), it seems.

If we win this battle, the reconstruction wave in Germany won't be stoppable anymore, I hope.

Oh I wish they would! And the rest of the altstadt while they're at it (although I think it's much harder to make convincing reconstructions of timber-framed houses that would have sagged and buckled with the passing centuries).

Sure. But perhaps you're familiar with such techniques so you might have been thinking it's industrially manufactured.
