Are there any plans to go beyond the Neumarkt and the adjacent streets to some of the surrounding areas as well? Or will it stop there?

There are some minor reconstructions going on here and there...like this one at the castle:

They also cleaned up the train station and added a new roof to it by Norman Foster.

BTW, the scaffolding of one of the building's been taken down (see last pic on the previous page)

Next up...

Hi Kamapy, I just found out, on polish forum, you are running great thread here. Thanks for so many pictures of Dresden's Neu Markt. I remember ruins of Frauenkirchen when I've visited Dresden back in mid 70's. Remember lots of commie bloks eaven in center city, and lock of of old monuments. It's nice to see Frauenkirchen rebuilt and NM under reconstruction. Now that I know about this thread, I will visit it often. Thanks again

Thanks for the nice words. It is a pretty amazing project, especially considering the attitude that some Germans have towards historic architecture. BTW. what's the status of the Saxon Palace in Warsaw? Will it definitely be rebuilt? Read somewhere that it'll only cost 40mil euros which sounds like an amazing price for such a big building.

Anyway, these buildings will be rebuilt as well:

I really don't know what to say here... I'm so in love with this reconstruction project!

The rebuilt Frauenkirche is amazing, it's so beautiful, especially the interior! It almost make me weep...

Thanks for all the magnificent pictures you provide us with, Kampflamm!

Wonderful project! I think London and Berlin should also reconstruct the buildings they lost during the war.

Btw. Are there any old bilding left in the Neumarkt area at all?

London? If only was any cities which need a reconstruction one of the most is Warsaw which lost 90% buildings. After war there was reconstructed only the oldest monuments from XV-XVIII centrury (many are not still reconstructed) but lost all buildings from XIX-XX c. I think London doesn't need a reconstruction because in spite of all has a historical atmosphere.

Pretty much all German cities could use large scale reconstructions. In a sense Germany's lucky that East Germany was so poor, because they simply weren't able to tear down that many buildings after the war, let alone reconstruct them in a socialist style. In West Germany on the other hand, plenty of beautiful buildings which could have been salvaged were torn down during the years of the Wirtschaftswunder and replaced with bland modernist buildings. I read somewhere that out of all the destruction that took place as a result of WW2, 50% took place after the war itself. Ie, many buildings could have been saved but they were destroyed because people needed new homes quite quickly and some people saw old architecture as a remnant of more authoritarian times.

That's very sad what you said I was convinced that in West Germany they saved many pre-war architecture. In Poland many buildings from XIX/XX c. was destroyed because of the aristocratic style which was with discrepancy of communist opinions.

Could You tell me, where else in Germany are reconstructing any monuments, old towns, etc.? Dresden reconstruction is fantastic and is a perfect example for other cities which lost their monuments

I agree, however, Warsaw rebuilt the old town when pretty much nothing has been rebuilt in London and Berlin. The East End of London was pretty much wiped out and take a look at the river banks, they´re full of post-war crap, and parts of the city too! Berlin suffered much more than London did and should also rebuild some of its old buildings.
