Hong Kong or Shanghai, definately a chinese city. China will be the worlds next superpower, and so much money has been ploughed into these cities of late. Hong Kong looks like something out of blade runner, just wait 10 odd years and Shanghai will be there too. New cities, new money, new superpower.

Shanghai
Tokyo
LAGOS

(I'm picking Lagos because it probably represents the common city of the future better than any of the wealthier ones. The future of urbanism on our planet is not Shanghai or Hong Kong. It's Lagos, Dhaka, and Karachi.)

Then why did you also choose Shanghai and Tokyo?

Some of you choose some strange cities to include.

I don't see any futuristic aesthetic in vancouver except maybe the stargate sound stages.

Shanghai in my opinon is a clear leader. I am basing my feelings heavily on aesthetics and buildings like Oriental Pearl gives it immediate credibility - as the design is so extraneous in shape form and colour that it cant be interpreted as anything but futuristic.

Obviously times change and this is evident in towers such as the space needle which when conceived appeared a vision of the future but now looks like a remnant of 1950s 60s idealised visions of the future. One day Shanghai may too look dated and a victim of changes in perception. What once looked modern can very quickly look dated and old fashioned.

Vegas also gets notable mention - the Luxor, the glitz and once again the extraneous nature of the buildings give it a other worldliness that has a definite futuristic edge.

Shanghai is a standout winner with its offbeat architecture, maglev airport train and dizzying interchanges. It has a way to go but personally for me it is the closest thing we have to a current vision of the future.

Because I knew that the topic was really which cities looked the most futuristic, meaning something like the cities look like they could be in a sci-fi movie. That's why I said Tokyo and Shanghai. I picked Lagos just to make a statement about the future, but I knew it wouldn't be nominated, and I also knew it wasn't really what was meant by "futuristic."
