The vending-machine wars
16 October 2006
Advertising Age

Autumn usually means a change of colors. And in Japan it's not just the leaves. It is the time of year when the flashing lights of vending machines also go from green to red. In the first week of October, the vending machines that line the streets selling an endless range of drinks start twinkling different colors.

Under each displayed beverage, there is a little light indicating if it is in stock in the machine. Cold drinks have a green or sometimes blue flashing light. But in winter there are also rows of red flashing lights indicating you can get a canned coffee at a hand-warming temperature.

There are about 5.5 million vending machines in Japan, or one for every 25 people. Of course there are vending machines for all sorts of things apart from drinks. There are snack and cigarette machines, and other products from ice cream to hamburgers, rice to umbrellas, women's panty liners to DVDs. And, especially around major train stations, a wide variety of sex aids and condoms.

But it is the 3 million or so machines for drinks that are especially interesting. The average machine will have 18 to 20 different beverages such as bottled waters; flavored and specialty waters; carbonated drinks; juices; canned tea; and, the most prevalent, canned coffee. About one-third of all coffee consumed in Japan comes premade in a bottle, or more likely a can, from a vending machine. And on just about any block in any city, you will find two or more machines from different manufacturers lined up, a veritable smorgasboard of drinks on every roadside.

An increasing number of machines let you pay with a debit system built into your mobile phone. Some offer point-collection systems. And the machines act as minibillboards: Some have video built in, others talk back to you and some have digitized codes on their display panels that, when photographed by a mobile-phone camera, will automatically log the phone on to special promotion sites.

Great convenience if you are thirsty, but real pressure for marketers. For example, there is never one canned coffee in a machine but always five or more, and they are always adding flavors. So all year round there's a new drink available on the street. No wonder Japan is the home of constant innovation.

With all these technology happening in Japan that means that most of it's smaller town or cities are technologically advanced compared to the large megalopolis of other countries especially the less developed ones.

Japan is quite an impressive R&D powerhouse. They have come up with some innovative ways of maximizing their space and coming up with simple yet very practical uses.

Here is a bit on urban agriculture :

A vegetable farm in the office jungle of Tokyo's Otemachi business district may sound a bit weird
But temporary staff agency Pasona Inc. has created a 1,000-square-meter garden in the basement of an Otemachi office building, aiming to offer busy Tokyo businessmen an opportunity to share the joy of farming.

Jiji Press English News Service

The vegetable farm is located in the basement of a building where Pasona has its headquarters. The underground space formerly housed a bank vault. The company has converted the grimly basement into a sunny vegetable patch by using light emitting diodes and fluorescent bulbs, spending a total of some 180 million yen on lighting and other facilities.

Pasona says more than one hundred types of plants will be grown there, including flowers, vegetables such as tomatoes and lettuce, and even rice. The harvest will be supplied to restaurants in the building, the company said.

The company hopes to encourage Tokyoites to be interested in farming and prompt some of them to try a new career in the countryside. It plans to provide lessons in farming techniques.

"We want urban people to have confidence that they can do it," said Pasona President Yasuyuki Nanbu.

The concept of urban agriculture has been around for quite some time, although it has manifested itself in different forms. In other parts of the world, there are green rooftops and skygardens, but the question has always been on how to bring light to a basement to support plant life. Until now, the most common solution has been marijuana grow operations, but that causes a lot of damage to the building structure.

Tokyo - Hands down.

With Hong Kong a close second and Dubai, a very possible third in the near future.

We can't do that cause it's more citytalk than countrytalk

There's an anomaly between futurism at a national level and at a city level. Ironically, national efforts tend to drive the municipal agendas, but using the US as an example, the nation as a whole is at the forefront of technology but the adaptation of futuristic technology among the general populace is relatively poor compared to another advanced country such as Japan. It's better to discuss at a city level since it's easier to get some data for comparison.

Why does Tokyo only have modern architecture? After all the city is 1400 years old and apart from some temples I´ve never seen anything architecturaly significant in its cityscape.

Tokyo's futurism isn't so much in architecture, although there are a few really neat buildings such as the Hermes (?) store in Ginza. The futurism becomes very evident in the adaptation of technology in daily life. Walk into an electronics store, and you'll realize the rest of the world is still in the Stone Age.
