Only if the decision-makers allow it to be. Such a future is not desirable for the cities of this planet.

No, but if sci-fi like futuristic "utopias" (as loosely used as possible) cannot be used to decide the most futuristic city, then what can? Current trends that have persisted over decades? Current trends, i.e., the future, suggest that what we're headed towards is a monstrous gap....

Montreal's hills are on the island itself, not around it. The nearest hills on either side of the river are not so visible from Mont Royal unless you look very hard.

Also, Montreal sits on an island. Chongqing is at the junction of two rivers. Not exactly similar geography.

evaluation

The most futuristic city should be organicly grown, but still be planned to be ecological and sustainable. It must cary out the words hightech and environment.

It must be a global city and possess many functions such as governmental, administrative, jurisprudence, headquarters (but real decission head quarters-not "fake offices"), airports, transportation, best sustainable utility and to the needs and affordability adjusted leisure infrastructure, health, care, eductation, ...

This city must generate its energy through fusion power plants or through sun-earth-wind-water. This city should not generate tonns of waste ...

Because we do not see all this variables united in one city... I would prefer not to vote only for one. We could categorise some functions and then evaluate the 10 best cities for each function. out of that one could select that city with the most scores ... to be choosen as the most futuristic city

regards
jens rahnfeld

ps: nice story with the toiletts of tokio, but would not a "cloud city" or "underwater atlantis city" easily beat that futuristic rank

ps2: I agree on the it would be spectacular for any futuristic city, if there would be equal rights and chances for education - so you could eliminate the social difference between rich and poor by closing the gap to enter education facilities. That is a nice variable by the way

Dubai is certainly far behind from futuristic when it compare with Tokyo or maybe HK. Saying that Dubai the 'most futuristic city' is equivalent by judging Vietnam is more futuristic than Japan.

Tokyo is way way way way way ahead of any city on earth and will remain like it coz its way way way way way ahead of any city, ow wait i said that already ! but yeah its way way way way ahead of any city ! DAMN IT ! ok ill stop

========================================

"Dubai is trying and has got some interesting stuff but it will take awhile (partly because it is so artificial a settlement -- just look at the pics from the 60s -- made stunning progress since then, but it was a small village with few people) -- in the same league as Las Vegas."

Las vegas is nothing compared to Dubai.

Actually, Las Vegas isn't a very sustainable city at all. Building it in the middle of the desert poses huge problems especially when sourcing fresh water for the residents.

Dubai's only futuristic thing about it is the skyline, mostly because it's all new. With respects to nearly everything else, Tokyo takes the cake.

That's it. Only the skyline. Other than that how about their infrastructure when compared to HK, Shanghai or Tokyo?
