Hahaha 808 state, you just proved Annibale right. No one explains why they choose the cities they do, they just post lists or pictures of skyscrapers!

A futuristic city must have a monorail 'cause those things are fun.

I'd say it's Tokyo also.

NY is definitely one of the world's greatest cities, but it's nowhere near one of the most futuristic.

In order to introduce some more elements into this, have a sample of some issues which might affect the "futurism" of some of the cities everyone is so quick to consider "futuristic":

http://www.digitaljournal.com/articl...pan_declining_

We know the birth rate in Japan is low but in Tokyo it's even lower than the national average - and in a country where the number of old people surpasses the number of children, this cannot be a good sign for the future.

http://www.gulfnews.com/business/Oil.../10214545.html

Apparently in Dubai, the consumption of energy has increased by 15% from 2006 to 2007 - now, correct me if I'm wrong but one of the main challenges of the future is to tackle energy consumption and its envrionmental impact...correct? It's nice to have incredible looking buildings and complete architectural freedom but if this means such whopping increases in energy consumption, it might not be good for the future.

http://www.shangzilla.com/article/sh...ts-to-silk-cut

Apparently the air quality in Shanghai at the time of writing was not very recommendable to walk around its streets - surely not good for the future of its residents considering the obvious health consequences.

I'm not in any way an authority in sustainable development and in environmental issues [and this year's indicators might be different] but I'd like to know if anyone who pointed those three cities had any of this in mind?

Even trough a building !

Tokyo G-Cans:
(Tokyo flooding system)

G-Cans project widely known as Tokyo underground flood tunnels is the networks of tunnels 6.4 kilometers (four miles) long built deep under the ground in the Tokyo suburbs. All this infrastructure is dedicated to prevent flooding when Tokyo metropolitan area rivers are overfilling during the rain seasons or in case of typhoons.

Car parking

Everywhere vending machines

Not only drinks, but also food

Shibuya futsall
Play soccer on a building :P

Or an rollercoaster on a building

Futuristic Buildings

Most futuristic city

And much more things that are futuristic.

I think "future" is only created by local people's efforts/innovation and hard working,
and I think Dubai lacks them.
Just relying on foreign technology/engineers/labors won't make a futuristic city,
because they are what you borrow from others, and not your own.
It will only result in a dead copy of something that already exists in other parts of the world at best, and that is not "futuristic" or "new" things, but second-hand technology/things.

I did not say that Dubai don't have universities...

But to be the best of the best, they have to be better than Oxford, Harward, Stanford, etc...

same thing for Best Hospitals, Best Museums and Theatres, Best Sport Teams, etc...

UAE is only a 38 yrs old country, so basically it needs much time to compete with other older pals in such fields, isn't it?

A skyline does not a futuristic city make.

right! Tokyo is by far the most futuristic city, none comes close. And not because of some fancy buildings, this notion of technology and futuristic applications is part of the every day life, in the details in the streets, etc.
