DISCUSS: Most Futuristic City

I have never been to Dubai but I have friends who are working there right now. Some of them have been to HK and they always say how HK is more advanced and stuff.

Again, yes Dubai has some really nice projects but do they have some nice infrastructure?

Is Dubai as vibrant as this?

Hong Kong is no easy Cake. However I think Dubai can match up to It.

No. Hong Kong have every type of Modern Transport system in the World.

Vibrancy doens't have much to do with futurism. Many poor cities are very vibrant, with lots of people moving about in markets, along streets, and in cars.

True but HK's vibrancy is different in a way that it has a futuristic feel to it.

In what way? Smart cards, cell phones, PSPs, and Ipods are becoming common in many of the world's cities.

A futuristic city has everything to do with how people live, rather than how many are on the streets. There are very futuristic places that are free from crowds, such as the cell-phone-ridden Scandinavian / Nordic countries.

Ok this sound crazy but that's how I look at at. HK's got the smart cards, a high percentage of cell phone users. Almost anyone can afford a PSP or an I-POD, plus you got the futuristic skyline with it's lighting effects and the Symphony Of Lights. I mean I don't see that kind of effect in other cities.

I always have that futuristic feel when I see those moving letter effects at The New World Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui. When I was in Manila or LA, I've never see something like that in either cities. Also, HK live very professionally, almost every news I see is on economy and developments and the city also features world news. We have an ultra modern infrastructure, technology, public transportation and of course, the airport.

Ok, I believe that HK may not be the most modern city but I find it more modern compared to other world cities.

Guys remember that we're not discussing the largest cities here? so let's leave the famous ones outta here... because those cities are all OLD...

now... if ya want a futuristic city, you need one that's new...

ShenZhen China... the city was only PLANNED in 1986, they started building I believe in 1989... now it is a financial center that rivals Shanghai and HongKong...

for those of you who doesn't know where it is, it's right across from HongKong. It is also supposed to be China's anwser to HK.

I don't think there should be any competition in this thread... doesn't matter how rich or large Tokyo or HongKong is, it CANNOT be more modern and futuristic overall than a city that's less than 20 years old

Shenzhen as a major financial centre rivalling Shanghai and Hong Kong, I don't think so!

Bullshit, futuristic doesn't necessarily mean new. Futuristic means representative of what cities will be like in the future. Are you saying that in the future all old cities will be torn down and replaced with new ones? Is a city that's full of ancient buildings but fully covered by a wireless broadband internet network considered less futuristic than a city built yesterday that's not yet connected to the internet?!? I'm not saying that you're choice of city is wrong but I am saying that the criteria by which you judge it to be more 'futuristic' is too narrow.

True, it don't matter if the city if young or not. And Shenzhen developed pretty well because of HK. In fact alot of the city's investments are mostly from HK!

Tokyo and Hong Kong are the most futuristic cities that I've been too. You have to look at the pacemakers of the Western world as well - New York, Los Angeles, London and Paris.

Dubai is only modern because there is an influx of cash. Yes there are some new and very impressive projects in this Emirate but, politically Dubai is in the stone age compared to the West, even if it IS progressive compared to the rest of the Middle East. For starters it is overwhelmingly car based and not really a pedestrian city. Which is regressive. The most modern cities (Hong Kong and Tokyo) employ public transportation as the main means of getting around, creating a more friendly urban experience. Just because a few tall buildings are going up doesn't mean a place is hyper modern.

Dubai should be congratulated for forging forward, but when I think of the future I automatically think of Tokyo. There is nowhere on earth in my opinion that feels as on the pace as Shibuya and Shinjuku.

I think things like futuristic buildings, shopping centres, jobs and infrastructure is more important for a futuristic city than if people are buying the latest cell phones, cars and ipods. Three years from now people in more backwards cities will have more modern gadgets than anyone have now but still be stuck in an 'old' environment.

I vote for Tokyo btw.
