The north south highway doesnt go through Perlis. Perlis is the only state in the west cost of the peninsular that doesnt have a highway. You cant convince any private firms to built it either coz it will not be viable. The population of perlis is far too small and it doesnt receive many visitors either. The government has to fund the highway and i cant forsee that happening either.

I think if the highway were to extend north to perlis, it would definitely help Perlis's economy and help bring investors into the state, the issue of viability shouldn't be an excuse for ignoring Perlis from the rest of the country. It is pretty apparent that the malaysian goverment hasn't done much in helping the state. The Highway should have extended all the way to padang besar at least instead it went to Bukit Kayu Hitam...and look what impact it has on that town! Look at Langkawi for God's sake! from nothin to twice bigger than Kangar..granted that it has major attractions but heck Perlis could at least throw a lil somethin to share some of Langkawi's visitors BUT then again, local goverment...has done little to improve the economy and the lifestyle in Perlis...they need to hire professionals and architect, town planners that has experiencs in town planning and developments...instead the locals (sorry to say this) come up with half baked tourist resorts (poor constructions, ammenities, infrstructures and appeal) and resting areas around town...
Kangar need a major shot in the arm...I mean MAJOR! my parents lives in Kangar and form what I see...very little progress since I left the sleepy lil town 16 years ago! The state goverment need to be a lil aggresive as far as exploiting what little Kangar has to offer...do somethin with the limestone hills dotted around Kangar...dig up a lake for recreational activities...just to name a few... |

...there is lack of 'competitive' edge/attitude/energy in Perlis...Perlis need to TRY at least to be on par with other states or come up with somethin unique to boost tourism, bring in investors to the state and not just 'tag along' and 'follow' and 'copy'....

i agree what u said, perlis is a small state, small size, less population, there the foctor why perlis state can not share the benefit from malaysia`s economy....... they should do something unique. centre government really unfair to perlis at that time.... 'north-south highway" by mean should link from north to south, but actually there was not... this cause perlis develop with very slowly and cause PadangBesar and other important area can not develop faster.... how u think ?? |

Well to me... what I feel is that Perlis is not as lucky as Johor. Because Johor is next to Singapore, Singapore's rapid development has more or less contributed to Johor's development. Perlis is next to South Thailand which is very much under development, so it cant help Perlis in any other way to bring up its development.
One more thing is that Perlis lacks of tourist attraction (personal view). If we are talking about natural attraction, Perlis's are not as attractive as what we have in Taman Negara or even states like Sabah and Sarawak. If we are thinking of bringing in Thai people to boost up the development, then it is real hard. South Thai is poor, how can we expect them to come to Malaysia to spend. In addition, our currency is higher. Infact, this encourages Malaysians to go Thailand.

Still irks me the fact that the North south highway was built totally Not quite north and south!! and state goverment just sat on their lazy asses when that was proposed. and yea...the Kuala perlis port....c'mmon, ya really think that's gonna materialise? and the dream' bridge to Langkawi...will remain a drream for many MANY years to come. Kangar is a dead town and gonna stay dead if DEAD and LAZY people run the state. I see some potential in Kangar but sad to say....no one really gives a darn.

..and another thing, Kangar is NOT that poor but just don't know where, when and how to spend wisely...just my opinion.
ah yea...Kangar needs a LANDMARK...maybe a park with a health theme or water theme...a go cart circuit close to downtown, mini golf? ..maybe, nice lookin bridges,,,doesn't have to as lavish as Putrajaya...improve quality of live of the underprivileged..build more flats, encourage multiple storey living (apartments/flats) to save land, bring more people in...and create small well planned and organized community... |

What I think and believe is that, it is very hard for Perlis to develop very rapidly under the shadows of stronger northen states like Penang and even Kedah, talking about economy wise.
So, the only way I think Perlis can get better development is by promoting its natural resources. Not all tourists look for theme parks, shopping malls and high towers. There are always markets for natural lovers. I think Perlis can go this way to get more and more tourist or adventurers to come in. By that, when more people know about this place, then only money will start to come in. If Perlis state Government still thinks that they can further develop their seaport to attract developers. Well, I am not so convinced. North to Perlis, we have strong competitors like Thai and even India. South to Perlis, we have own competitors within the country like Penang and Klang. Perlis needs a lot of investment to compete with these strong competitors. Does Perlis have an airport? I think no. Then tell me!!! who wants to go Perlis? If you ask someone from Penang to go Perlis, I think his/her answer to you is, then I rather drive all the way to Thailand. Dont even talk about people from Perak/KL/Johor. Bridge from Perlis to Langkawi? I guess this is promoting Langkawi more than Perlis! Again, this is a tough question as in how to develop Perlis. It all depends on how our central government allocates the money as well as development strategy. Well, I am not critisizing Putrajaya, I always like the development over there. But, what do you think if our Government used those money to develop Perlis and other poorer stats first? Suddenly I thought of one funny way to promote Perlis. Why not create some myteries and legends, like there's a lake in PErlis that people saw dragons/ghost or whatsoever before. This might be interesting and human beings are always busy body. Hahaha... Somehow I really feel that Perlis is one unlucky state in Malaysia.

you got that right Magician...Perlis is one lil sorry state...kesian man! Well I put the blame more on the state level...ah yea..perlis is not 'connected' to the rest of malaysia by means of AIR (airport) and GROUND (highways), kinda suck eh?? TINY state some more...all the way NORTH with poorer neighbors (thai border towns)...dang! can't get any worse than that!! BUT....BUT that does not mean that Perlisian should just sit back and take things as they come...they gotta get off their asses and speak up...do somethin....AND the Perlis menteri besar, he hasn't done much...all talk and little action...A lot has been promised to the people or Kangar and Perlis in general and not much delivered.
Magician, you mentioned somethin bout promoting and exploting nature as one way of bringing visitors...rock climbing, maybe a mock kampung with kampung style living as a 'Malaysian experince kampung style' would be cool... Do something with the rivers that snakes tru Kangar...clean it up! and create a boardwalk...light it up...do river float parade or somehtin...makes it wider...create fountain parks round the city....open air 'padang' with big screen TV...get people to come out and enjoy the little town that they live in... |

Well if the Menteri Besar is not doing anything... then the local citizens should stnad up and make some noise... it is totally useless for people from other states to make so much noise while the local people dont even care about their hometown at all. I am not saying all Perlis people are ignorance, but if you want a better life, you should do something and not just keep quiet and give up to fate.
Economical wise, Perlis is rather weak with its bad location, networking and resources. So, Perlis can only use whatever they have and transform those into an attractions. We do not need another city like KL or Penang or JB... but if Perlis can be developed into something similar to Langkawi which is a tourist spot. It is a good thing to Perlis and Malaysia too. To answer Khoojyh's question, I think the government should bring in more foreigner tourists. They tend to be more adventurous and like to go back to nature world. As in which city/state Perlis should learn from, I guess the best example will be Langkawi. We do not have high tech theme park, or very fancy casinos there, yet Langkawi still manage to attract tourist every year. I think Perlis can do that too, in stead of focusing on beaches, why not focus on mountains, lakes, and whatever it is available...? Well, just my personal opinion... always talk is easier than work...

ya.. i should think some idea to make menteri besar perlis know some information in here.
then... to start make perlis develop with more faster, the local goverment should increase their service, i mean the local government no just there and say something which would not become true... should say realistic and try to make it become true. be hornestly built bridge to Langkawi need a lot of money, and this bring a lot of benefit to langkawi than in perlis.. i think they better spend the money construt a highway which needed in state like built a highway from N-S highway to Padangbesar because there is tourism center and have a lot transportation company, built some resort in location near to lake especially in timah tasok, wang kelian moutain or any place that can attract tourism, maintance some tourism center. like in border town, kuala perlis and so on, or built a tourism university or college. i think this is more effeciency.... am i right, anyway, for my opinion bridge to LK is not a good plan, built may be is easy but maintancence is difficult.. |
