HDTV in Thailand

Let this thread dedicates to HDTV in Thailand.
Currently, there is no HDTV broadcasts in Thailand either on Cable TV and Free TV. Even though HDTV-builtin tvs are on stores everywhere in the kingdom.

Features of HDTV:
- 16:9 ratio of program (Anamorphic Wide Screen)
- higher resolutions: 720p - 1280 x 720 (progressive - NTSC - HD), 1080i - 1920 x 1080 (interlace - NTSC - HD), 1080p - 1920 x 1080 (progressive - NTSC - HD), PAL 750p, 1125i.
- digital audio systems: DTS, 5.1 and 7.1 channels

Features of HDTV enabled cable tv:
- interactive system (back and forth transmittion. eg- voting, chatting via remote)
- pay per view movies and music on demand
- messaging system
- interactive menu
and a lot more due to the provider.

i think it's cool. but i think i would take a while for Thailand as there are not enough demand i guess.

The real HDTV system is extremely in high price, starting from US1,000 since it was been developing more than 10 years from Japan and now we had 2 univeral standard, Europe and Japan version launching

The cheaper HDTV is that you can be viewed from you existing TV by adding on decode unit for exchanging to Digital mode

Also, There is a limit market for Thailand sharing in exceptional to the few of top segment

Hence, I can't be seen any production from TV station will be eager in shift to dignital in the future caused in need be investing a huge money

HDTV is the next generation broadcasting mode in viewing for widen screen from 300 Pix up to 1000

Usually it is connected to cable or satellite receiver that in no relationship with ADSL, Telephone line

I think it will take at least 10 years from now before HDTV will be introduced in thailand because HDTV plasmas or LCDs are really expensive and I dont think thai people wanna put a lot of money on a new HDTV.

It's way beyond that, satit28.
The picture quality basically is around 2 times or more detailed than DVD quality (which is just only 640x480px). The source is usually cable tvs or via air-transmittion. You will need a new cable (not RGB like DVD, and normal AV cable but it will be HDMI) to connect from the set-top box to the TV and the set.

I think so too but richer Thais already own lots of them though. And sometimes they have 2 or more of the system installed in the house already!
Anyway I've been told that a couple of international schools in Chiang Mai is installing them into all the classroom for the school-wide broadcast, co-curricular activities and presentation. Interesting! (Because it is cheaper than a $5000-priced smart boards)

World Cup showcase for Philips’ HDTV

Royal Philips Electronics, the giant Dutch electronics manufacturer, will try to launch high-definition television (HDTV) on the mainstream market by profiling its capabilities during next June’s Fifa World Cup in Germany.

The event, expected to attract 30 billion viewers worldwide, will provide the perfect platform for the company to promote the technology.

Rudy Provoost, CEO of Philips Consumer Electronics for Royal Philips, said his company would be a major sponsor of the event and install a wide-screen Ambilight FlatTV, which uses HDTV technology, at the stadium for spectators to view the event.

Ronald de Jong, general manager of Philips Consumer Electronics Germany, said Philips expected its work with Fifa to help create a revolutionary shift in consumer behaviour that would be as significant as the move from black-and-white to colour television decades ago.

HDTV is a technology that has five times the resolution of a standard television set.

Philips will offer over 20 FlatTV models, and 85 per cent of the company’s total television production line will comprise HDTV technology, including HD set-top boxes that will be available on the market later this year.

Sets using HDTV technology has been available for the past decade, with many reputable manufacturers offering them. However, there has been a reluctance to invest in the promotion of HDTV, due to its unsuitability for countries like Thailand, which use analogue rather than digital broadcasting systems.

Provoost added that television-content providers in some European countries and Japan have already upgraded their broadcasting equipment for HDTV.

As the cost of upgrading broadcasting equipment is significant, Philips has held discussions on partnership offers with content providers in various countries.

Philips has already secured a partnership with a large pay-television operator in Germany called Premiere, which will switch to a digital broadcasting system from the final quarter of this year. Partnerships with other content providers in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, France, Portugal and Italy will lead to them switching from analogue to digital by the first quarter of next year.

However, Provoost added that it could take years to introduce HDTV technology in Asia, due to the negotiations and business procedures involved.

Yeah, its perfect for movies . I never fall asleep anymore during a movie
before I had a 28 inch CRT and it was not even fun to watch movie or playing xbox.Now its really fun and I could never ever thinking about getting a smaller television than 42 inch.
