Any news? It (the broadcasting part) is becoming more and more common here in northern Europe, and of course in NA. When will it arrive in Thailand?

I can understand the difficulties with getting broadcast signals (over the air free tv) changed to HD, but UBC broadcasting in Standard Def is really sad.

I have resorted to plugging my set top box to my media center and using software to upconvert the signal. Not the most ideal of solutions, but good enough until they get their act together.
Considering the number of High Definition Flat Panels being sold nowdays, More people should be aware of how ugly standard definition signals look like on such a beautiful screen.

that whole public broadcasting thing in thailand is in a bit of a mess...

and somehow this has allowed a virtual monopoly for TrueVision (formerly UBC) and i think the lack of HD is due to

1 ) the lack of awareness even among HD LCD TV buyers in thailand... (they don't even know the benefits of HD)

2) the lack of competition in the cable tv business

3) also... to get thai contents in HD... i think we still need more expertise.

4) no push from the government to go digital (the MICT has enough to worry about so this wouldn't be on their agenda at least for the next 1 to 2 years)

well, maybe get yourself a PlayStation3 and blueray discs...
connect it to your TV using HDMI cable then you can get some HD in thailand.

I think the mess is due to us not having a National Broadcasting Commission, similarly, 3G technology was delayed because of a lack of a National Telecommunications Commission. Now that the NTC is here, the regulatory hurdles should be overcome. Once the NBC is here, the regulatory hurdles will be overcome and hopefully the TV and cable business in Thailand will open up for some competition and change.

there is serious talk about merging the roles of the NTC and the NBC.
This is a smart move becuase in the next few years there will be a lot of overlap over the two regulators as convergence becomes more of an issue.

It's more likely that awareness of HD in Thailand would be encouraged by Blu-ray and HD-DVD movies (in the near future).

And it's very likely that HDTV broadcasting in Thailand would start through either IPTV (through broadband internet network) or through cable TV, not on-air.

I agree except for the part about IPTV. Even movie downloads in the US (iTunes) are still not HD. Even streaming on your own wireless network would require significant resources. I doubt you'll get IPHDTV anywhere in the world.

Actually TimeWarner is using that technology right now. But it is through fiber-optic cable: you get both the IPHDTV contents and internet at the same time.

But the more realistic thing is just Ti-Vo. I heard that True Visions was going to do something like that with current DStv system.

Tivo doesnt mean its HD.
it just means you can record your programs on a hard drive.

True IPTV has it already. The generic name of a Tivo is a DVR (Digital Video Recorder).
