No not mine. I was meaning it's a pretty basic Sketch Up image, considering it's being used to publicise a £6.3m rennovation.

They're not considering removing the cast iron supports are they? They're a unique feature to the building.

It's a beautiful space - I really hope that in modernising it they don't strip it of all its character and grace. That render looks early and crude to me. Hope there's a lot of detail missing from it. It's barely recognisable as the same space in the two pics.

I didn't even realise it was the same space.

Wait, no, looking at the image on the World Architecture page, I don't think it is the same space - the SketchUP render is of one of the side halls. All is fine.

Dude - good save. My bad. I could only see a faint resemblance, so wasn't sure.
Comment still stands though. The second pic looks more like a bland modern office than a graceful market-cum-art gallery.

Acquisition of the Briggait Steeple, 72 Clyde Street from the Merchants House of Glasgow Purpose of Report: To advise members of an offer received from the Merchants House of Glasgow to sell the Briggait Steeple, adjacent to the Briggait building in Clyde Street, to the Council for £1. Recommendations: It is recommended that the Committee: a) Approves the acquisition of the Briggait Steeple from the Merchants House of Glasgow for the sum of £1; b) Authorises the Executive Director of Development and Regeneration Services to incorporate the Briggait Steeple into the lease for the Briggait building which is currently being negotiated with the WASPS Studio Trust. 1. BACKGROUND 1.1 Members will be aware that the Council has previously agreed to lease the Briggait complex to WASPS Studio Trust Ltd (WASPS) to allow it to be refurbished as a craft production complex with the Council contributing £2.2 million towards an overall cost of approximately £6.5 million. WASPS have raised the balance from a range of other sources. 1.2 Briggait Steeple forms a distinctive part of the Merchant City skyline. However, although it is incorporated within the physical boundary of the Briggait complex, it is a separate building structure owned by the Merchants House of Glasgow. The Steeple was constructed in 1665 and is a Category A listed building. 1.3 The Merchants House recently offered to convey the Steeple to the Council for £1 since they have no requirement for the property, and do not have the resources to invest in it for any productive purpose. Spiers Gumley has completed a stonework and condition survey of the property. The property is in good condition for its age and, while there are areas where repair works would be prudent, they are not urgent and could be phased over a ten year period. The estimated cost of these repair works (at current prices) is approximately £200,000. These works would be eligible for consideration for funding from the Glasgow Conservation Trust and Historic Scotland, and meet the criteria for support through the Listed Building allocation of the City Growth Fund 2008/09. 1.4 Given the physical relationship between the Briggait Steeple and the Briggait, it is considered that it would be beneficial to bring the buildings into a single ownership and, subject to the agreement of WASPS, to include the Briggait Steeple in the lease which is currently being finalised. WASPS have indicated that they would be prepared to consider taking the Briggait Steeple into the Briggait lease subject to having no liability for the capital repairs programme identified above. 2.0 SERVICE IMPLICATIONS Financial: The estimated repair costs of £200,000 are not urgent and can be spread over a period of up to ten years if required. The normal maintenance obligations can be incorporated in the lease to Wasps Trust. Legal: The proposal will require legal transactions between the Council, Merchants House, and WASPS Studio Trust. Personnel: None. Service Plan: The proposals are in line with the priority given in the DRS Service Plan to the conservation and re-use of historic buildings and structures. Environmental: The completion of building repairs over an extended period will safeguard the position of a Category A listed structure which constitutes an important part of the Glasgow sky line.

Sorry to be out of touch, but what was that building before? Looks like a train station or maybe a prison?

Murdomac I landed on the wrong page on this thread and by chance came across your posting of two years ago. (posting number 28).
Astonishing how things have got reversed. Mike Russell now in charge of driving through the start of Creative Scotland! Going by what I heard in his recent robust public address to the Arts & Culture sector he at least now brings a bit of clarity and steel on the way forward – i.e. Creative Scotland will now happen and the only issue is how quickly we can get it operational. A worry about Russell is that he has not shown himself to be any friend of Glasgow (he seems to come from that unworldly rural strain of the Scottish Government that seems prejudiced against big urban Scotland). So I hope that Glasgow continues to press it’s case to be host for Creative Scotland – because you can be sure that Edinburgh (and Stirling and Dundee) will be pressing theirs. But anyway thank heavens the politicos are now going to discount those in the Arts & Culture lobby who seem to want to only wail and moan and stop anything happening that is not precisely what they personally want. The entire Arts and Culture sector has not exactly covered itself in dignity over the past year. There were recurrent nasty ‘leaks’ and allegations to the press instead of meaningful engagement with the policy-makers. The recent ‘round Robin’ letter from the chairs and directors of theatres (as I think it was) protesting at (perceived) funding cuts and that was sent direct to John Swinney was probably the final undermining of the sectors ‘own’ Minister in the shape of Linda Fabioni. The Arts & Culture sector can be sure that whilst it has claimed one Ministerial scalp, this has not won it friends in the present Scottish Government. |

On the Clyde Waterfront site Macco.
Timescale is up to 2010, on saying that the project should have started way back in 2008... obviously funding issues with Creative Scotland being formed and Scotish Arts Council being disolved at the moment, then again 600k is a lot for one small project ,with the Brigit being centred as the main arts venue in that area i feel this project may fall through. ![]() Location Glasgow City Centre, Merchant City Address 14-20 Osborne Street, Glasgow, G1 5EZ Type Current Description The Bathhouse is a proposed new visual arts centre in Glasgow’s Merchant City. It is the first venture of The Third Step, a charity created by the renowned artist Peter Howson to help alcoholics and recovering drug addicts. RMJM have drawn up proposals for the conversion of a 19th century bathhouse to create a space that will allow the public to see art as a living process - from artist, through to training and printing and then to the gallery. The principal studio space, for Peter Howson himself, will have a glass wall and passers-by will be able to see the internationally-acclaimed artist at work. A further three studios will provide workspace for local artists who will be trained by Howson. A ground floor restaurant and top floor apartment complete the accommodation. Cost Approximately £600,000 Current status Work expected to begin in 2008 Timescale 2008 - 2010 Lead partner The Third Step Other partners Merchant City Initiative Project team Architects: RMJM; Quantity Surveyor: Brown And Wallace.
