WATERLOO, CANADA: Waterloo Town Square

THE PROJECT OVERVIEW

Exact Location: Uptown Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
Relative Location: 1 hour from Toronto

Project Overview: In the 1950's, a project called Waterloo Town Square was initiated to place am enclosed suburban shopping mall in the downtown core of Waterloo. (This area is now known as Uptown.) The large mall broke up the street grid by ripping a gaping hole in the pleasant streetscapes and being surrounded by a moat of asphalt- a massive parking lot. The mall went through a large slump and is now being partially demolished to make way for street-fronting retail, commercial, and residential buildings with large, wide
sidewalks for window shopping.

Anchor Tenants: Valu-Mart, Shoppers Drug Mart, Scotia Bank, Lucy뭩 Seafood Kitchen.

Trade Population: 120,942 people

The mall before the regeneration project was begun:

Yes- about 105,000, and with students, about 135,000.

However, no, we aren't having a skyscraper boom... but we can drive one hour to Toronto for that.

Okay, here's the scoop- my photo hosting site completely crashed and I lost all my photos in my account. I could get all angry in the comfort of my home because I lost some digital photos while children in the third world starve, but I have decided to slowly rebuild the collection of pictures.

Anyways, I am going to post some photos below for those who are interested but have noticed that all the photos on the previous pages are red X's now.

The new shops along Willis Way. These shops' exteriors are almost done now:
