I think they are estimating between 5 and 10 thousand. I think that most of the evacuees moved perminently to Baton Rouge though.

check www.hurricanehousing.org it tells u how many beds has been taken and how many avialable in the US. so far it says about 125,000 beds taken so far.
I believe people move permanently spread all over the US, not only Houston or Baton Rouge. Some are spread temporarily, also. |

Hopefully most of them eventually return back to New Orleans to rebuild the city. But I heard there is more than 200k in Houston now.

Actually, yes, there are tons spread all over the south. We have taken several people all the way here in Louisville, and many children have been enrolled in our schools for the rest of the year.
There are also a lot of people who evacuated here to family before Katrina hit.

We're housing evacuees up the river in the Twin Cities, as well.
A local news station interviewed a family who evacuated here from New Orleans and they said they don't plan on going back. I wonder what other evacuees are planning to do. |

And once they empty out the water, there'll be vast rebuilding efforts needed. Is there tha much excess housing stock in Houston and especially Baton Rouge anyway? I read about FEMA leasing two Carnival cruise ships to dock in Houston's harbor?

If NO is not rebuilt in a years time, I could see at least half of the displaced persons finding new homes and lives in nearby cities and states, especially Houston and the rest of Texas where some 300,000 of them are already there. I also heard that Illinois will take in 10,000 refugees, Cali. Utah, Arizona.......

The Ecstasy and the Sensation will be berthed at Galveston’s cruise ship terminal for up to six months. 5,000 Hurricane Katrina refugees are scheduled to arrive at the Port of Galveston on piers 37, 39 and 40 today.

I think it's entirely possible that 100,000 to 150,000 NO evacuees will permanantly settle in the Houston area. That is if they can find decent jobs.

There have been so many intervews where people say they are staying in Houston for good. One man said "Houston is the land of milk and Honey" and that he was staying there for good.

They are planning on moving up to 10,000 evacuees to Illinois, mainly Chicagoland.
