Barcelona (pt.2) The Exiample & Gothic Quarter

ok, in part 2, we look at two neighbouring districts that couldn't be any more different from each other...

The wide straight avenues of the Eixample area and the narrow alley's of the Gothic Quarter.

Great city series, just like pt1. In most cases these wide-angle shots really give a better impression.

Beautiful! I LOVE the Gothic Quarter, don't know why it's so unknown. Everyone goes to the Ramblas, the Parc Güell, Sagrada Famila or the Fortress and Harbour - but why is Barcelona's old town not famous?

I loved it a lot and was very surprised by it. Also the Cathedral is worth visiting. There's nearly some Venice athmosphere in it - only camler. Maybe it's good that the tourists are not so interested in it

Most of the tourists only visit the edge of the Gothic Quarter, around and close to the main cathedral, Plaza Catalunya and where in meets the Ramblas. Maybe because of the maze of streets it puts them off a bit, it certainly is so big and dense it's easy to get lost in. The tourists also ruined Plaza Real. It looks so great in photo's, but in reality it's surrounded by the worst restaurants and bars in the city, probably because they don’t care about returning locals.

To be honest, the gothic quarter is just so large it takes forever to explore, and almost impossible to find the same street twice, even with a map Of cause this is what makes it so fascinating for me, strolling around and getting lost in the endless labyrinth of tiny narrow streets.

Exactly

I spent hours strolling around there because it's the only place that I could feel lost apart from Venice - and I enjoy it There's so many things to discover on every corner.

Anyway it's strange - around Plaza Catalunya are a lot of hotels, the Ramblas are like the Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich the ancient wall of the old town, but only few experience a little left turn further than the cathedral... a pity... for them (you can really relax there from the noise and traffic of the city)

^ year, it's better that the tourists don't venture too far in. That's where you find some amazing funky resturants and bars filled with locals. Having almost no traffic for most of it, it is a great place to get away from the noise of the city, which is really amazing as it is technically the central part of the city, at least in historical terms.

The lower part (starting at Plaza Real) can get a bit seedy though, esepcially as you get closer to the port or in the lower part of el Bon, but this will no doubt change over time. El Bon is already becoming quite a trendy area, with a mix of working class, artists and well off people living together.
