APPROVED: 19-storey Office Tower on Planet Site

There's an article in today's 'tiser saying that plans were discussed at last Monday's ACC meeting for a $55 million, 19-storey office development at 73-79 Pirie Street - the site of the former Planet nightclub.

Woods Bagot are the architects and are still working on the design, so no renders yet.

The developers say that if these plans aren't financially viable, they're likely to revert the site to an entertainment venue.

Here's the article:

$55m office plan to replace Planet

07sep05

FORMER city nightspot The Planet could be demolished to make way for a $55 million office building.

Plans for the 73-79 Pirie Street site are for a 19-storey building including ground floor shops, two levels of underground car parking, and over 35,000 square metres of office space.

"It's always been in the wind. It has always been a development site," said the inner-city site's owner and managing director of the Adelaide Development Company, Fiona Roche.

"Now is the time to see what can and can't be done."

Lord Mayor Michael Harbison raised the development proposal at a council meeting on Monday night and said it was "great to see the confidence placed in the future of the city".

Later, Councillor Anne Moran said she had not yet seen the plans, but would welcome a "good" development. "That building has been left empty for a long time, so development would be welcomed and encouraged," she said.

Woods Bagot architects are working on the new building's design.

Adelaide Development Company said it would not release more detailed plans for the building while it considered "technical issues" like the number of parking spaces required.

Ms Roche said, if plans for the site were not financially viable, the site would most likely revert to an entertainment venue.

"But given the economy in SA is buzzing, if there was going to be the time it would be now," Ms Roche said.

"We won't start construction until we have tenants and we won't have tenants until we know what is able to be built," Ms Roche said.

Woods Bagot seem to be picking up all the new office tower jobs in Adelaide - not a bad thing if CCT1 is anything to go by

looking forward to a render...

Woodhead International do a bit too and Loucas Zahos has also done a bit of Urban Construct's work.

Pruszinski's seem to have Hines' work all to themselves and have designed Conservatory on Hindmarsh.

Still, Woods Bagot are the most prominent - Santos, City Central etc.

We shouldn't get excited by this proposal yet, as it is still speculation.

Cheers Cul, nice work as always.

Of course, any renders you can beg for would be greatly received.

Sounds good to see that Adelaide is definitely improving on its former glory into an era of modernisation. Where abouts is 73-79 Pirie Street - I know where Pirie Street is, but where precisely is its location?

Darn I remember going to Planet every Saturday night "back in the day" to the tunes of DJs Brendon, Madness and ATB. I still have a free ticket in my drawer somewhere

Has there been any news regarding this developement. It was posted some months ago now. And Yesterday there were painters painting the outside of the Planet which seems like a good sign nothing will be happening any time soon...?
