Wouldn't it make more sense having tunnels under the canal so very tall ships can pass through? Speaking of which; will US Carriers be able to pass with the expanded canal? |

Jamaica is showing keen interest in the expansion of the Panama canal. The port of Kingston will be dredging to a depth of 17.5m as well as expanding the port from 2.2 million teu to 3.2 million teu by 2014/2015. The government of Jamaica will also construct factory space for light manufacturing, ICT/BPO,...etc (Caymanas Economic Zone ). The government of Jamaica is hoping to position the country as a global logistics hub (Port expansion plans 'well advanced' - Hylton ).

![]() I'm glad that Jamaica is having these aspirations. This Panama canal expansion will be great for the world economy which will help many more people have a more comfortable standard of living. Earlier I hoped that Panama would build a sea level canal but from what I can tell it's not really that feasible even with current technology. I still wonder about that though.

I never got an answer to my question. Will US Aircraft Carriers be able to pass the canal with the expansion?

![]() Sure they will be able to pass the Canal after the expansion. Not sure how Panamanians will react to that, though, since every time you let pass one of those ships through the Panama Canal, you are exposing the Canal and the entire whole country to a terrorist risk. |

Is the Panama canal expansion still on track for a mid 2015 completion?

It's right on track to be opened in 2015.
