Recently built "roundabout" in Sofia's suburbs, which is really messed-up.

Impressive indeed, but is it actually a roundabout officially?

Personally, I think the old name was a bit silly. :-P

Uh-oh. Are we going to have another argument about the difference between a roundabout and a traffic circle (or rotary, or...)?

Something about a whirlpool. It was funny at first, but I thought it was overdue for a name change

I remember it was "Roundabouts - The whirlpool of life" or sth like that. Of the many nicks I gave to my hometown, one is "The roundabout" because of the number of them we have.

No, it's not a roundabout, search on this thread for air photo showing 2 way circulation.

It was funny, but not if you thought about it too much. (A whirlpool sucks you in. A roundabout, hopefully, doesn't.)

Conclusion - you can not turn a standard crossing into a roundabout using only a bucket of paint!

That roundabout is way too small anyway. Trucks couldn't use it if it was a physical roundabout. A roundabout diameter should be at least 35 - 40 meters.

That could so easily be in the UK, but it's too wide

I imagine that there are more of these than proper ones

That last one's just silly. Who'd even notice it, unless the road happened to be clear in front of you so you could see the lane markings?

25m is enough for a truck. (i see 100s of trucks turning one small roundabout near my work)

18 meter radius is considered the minimum in the Netherlands on roads with more than a few trucks per day. Roundabouts should ease traffic flow, not be obstacles.

But aren't roundabouts built as obstacles or speed reducers these days? There are some built in my town for this purpose rather than improving traffic flow, i.e 90% of the traffic is going straight through the roundabout thus making it an obstacle. I predict a future where roundabouts will be overbuilt to obscurity in the name of traffic safety.

How are those better than standard equal priority intersections?
