Not a monument but an object in a museum....

देश में सबसे बेहतर हमारी ‘ममी’ की हैल्थ

Quote:

A mummy displayed in Jaipur's Albert Hall Museum since 1885, according to a restoration team from Egypt, is in a better condition compared to other Mummies in India.

The restoration and scientific research team from Egypt did an x-ray and are now restoring some damaged bandages and the wooden coffin. The director of the museum informed that putting the mummy in an air proof box along with some chemicals has helped it and the visiting team has now suggested some more techniques to the Museum director. This is not the first time the mummy is getting restored. A similar restoration was done in 1998.

Interactive museum to come up near Jantar Mantar

Quote:
JAIPUR: Conceptualized over two years ago, the state-of-the-art interactive museum is finally set to see the light of the day.

The project has been designed by Barry Lord, a leading museum planner internationally. It has got an in-principle approval by the planning commission and will come up near the Jantar Mantar.

According to sources in the tourism department, "A proposal for a grant of Rs 45 crore has been sent to the Centre in the last week of February after a meeting with the planning commission. The project, to be located in the buffer zone of Jantar Mantar, is principally approved of and once we get the grant, the museum would be ready in two years time."

The detailed project report consists of two projects."One would be to convert the Jaleb Chowk into an art square and the other would be to develop the museum. Work is on at the Jaleb Chowk to restore the area to its original condition," he said.

The project by Lord Cultural Resources with Barry Lord finds mention in the list of projects Lord has undertaken as Sawai Man Singh Town Hall Museum, Jaipur, India, Planning and Consultancy Services, 2008 09.

The idea is to convert the Sawai Man Singh Town Hall into a world class museum and exhibition area, representative of Rajasthan's history. The mid 19th century two-storied structure (alongwith a basement) is currently under restoration.

This would help in attracting more visitors and also integrate it with other heritage structures in the Walled City area.

"The exhibitions at the museum would tell the story of Jaipur with an emphasis on the regional and historical aspects of Rajasthan, and include a gallery dedicated to children and families," a source said.

"There would be a life-size touch screen model of the city to depict its development from the time of maharajas to the present scenario. It would have a conservation lab with artifacts from all over Rajasthan and a dynamic gallery where artists can display their works at a nominal fee," the source added.

The main assembly hall with the help of a multi-media software would acquaint the tourists with the entire concept of the museum and elaborate on the details of the various sections besides explaining in detail about the features of Jantar Mantar.

Plans afoot for beautification of Ghat ki Guni

Quote:
jaipur: In a bid to give Ghat Ki Guni a complete heritage look, principal secretary, urban development and housing (UDH), GS Sandhu, has given a fresh direction to draft proposals for renovation of private buildings. Plans are also afoot to beautify Khande in the Walled City.

In a meeting at the Jaipur Development Authority's (JDA) headquarters on Saturday, officials discussed major issues of heritage conservation.

About heritage site Ghat Ki Guni on Agra road, the officials discussed renovation of 15 private housing units as part of the project. On this issue, Sandhu gave a direction to hire consultant agency to draft proposals. However, the officials debated from where the money for renovation work will come, whether from people or government agency.

Officials also discussed the beautification of Khande (corners of market) from where vendors were removed during anti-encroachment drive "Operation Parkota". Officials said that beautification of Khande should be remodelled on heritage look of other city buildings. For this purpose, the proposals have been sought from consultant agencies too.

On the other hand, Sandhu has asked the Amber Development and Management Authority (ADMA) to finish renovation work of Amber Fort by Diwali. Notably, the ADMA seems enraged to renovate facade of fort with budgets around Rs12 crore.

Nagaur Fort to become intl centre for conservation of wall paintings

Ajay Parmar, TNN, Feb 17, 2011, 12.43am IST

Quote:
JODHPUR: Nagaur Fort is all set to become an international centre for conservation of wall paintings.

The efforts are being made not only to conserve the wall paintings as old as 17 century but also to invite students and experts from all over the world and strike new partnerships to learn and undertake its conservation. Efforts are also being made to seek help form IIT for setting up a laboratory in Nagaur to address various aspects of the conservation.

The Nagaur Fort influenced by the Rajput-Mughal architecture, which is being developed as a tourist attraction centre with a new approach called Scholars Retreat, consists of four palaces -- Akbari Mahal, Bhakhat Singh Mahal, Hadi Rani Mahal and Abohawa Mahal.

All of them contain wall paintings ranging from 17 century to 19 century on different subjects like life of women, rag-ragini, climate and flora.

Curator of Mehrangarh Fort, Karni Jasol informed that presently the conservation work has been going on in the Akbari Mahal for the past three years and it is expected to take another three years as we are following the scientific analysis approach of the paintings. "We first study the material and technique used originally during that time in creating these paintings and plan a conservation approach accordingly instead of just retouching the paintings with new technology," Jasol said.

This all started in 2005 when the expert in the field Courtauld Institute of Art, London was invited by the fort administration to undertake a detailed survey and site wise conservation study of the paintings.

"The institution started the work on our expenses first and then after two years, we got the financial assistance from Getty Foundation of Germany," Jasol said.

And then finally the work started in 2007 from the Akbari Mahal, also known as Sheesh Mahal considering the significance and the perilous condition of its paintings and inlaid mirror work. In order to conserve a painting, it is necessary to understand its original technology, the causes and mechanisms of deterioration and then, based on this knowledge, design and assess case-specific conservation measures and interventions, said Jasol.

Though the work is very slow at present but Jasol is optimistic once the associations with the experts come by, thereby expediting the process. He informed that the central component of the wall painting conservation programme is the collaboration with Indian conservators, who can benefit from and disseminate the methodology advocated by all the project partners. Three highly skilled Indian conservators have been involved since 2006 and another two will join the team this year. In 2010, four MA students three from The Courtauld and one from the Institut National du Patrimoine (France) - also joined the team.

"The level of research, the conservation standards implemented and the scope for further conservation campaigns offer an unparalleled opportunity for training and dissemination of know-how in the field of wall painting conservation here. We hope that Nagaur will act in the future as a centre of long-lasting professional exchanges between the West and the East," Gaj Singh, the erstwhile ruler of Marwar anticipated terming it an ambitious and unique project ever taken up.

Fatehpuri Masjid in need of repair

Quote:
New Delhi: Seventeenth-century Fatehpuri Masjid in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk built on the orders of Mughal emperor Shahjahan’s wife Fetehpuri Begum is in dire need of repairs and restoration. The masjid is in fact in need of repairs for about 30 years. Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal who represents Chandni Chowk constituency in Parliament, had instructed Indian National Trust for Art Cultural Heritage (INTACH) to prepare a comprehensive conservation plan. The project may cost 6-7 crores of rupees and may take about two years to complete. A senior member of INTACH says that it is a living mosque and hence it may take longer time, say 18 to 24 months, if the work goes on uninterrupted. Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Director Gautam Sangupta says that though this mosque is not listed as a protected monument under the ASI, it supports the plan for restoration of the mosque.

Mah Laqa Bai's tomb restored

Quote:
HYDERABAD: In shambles until last year, the magnificent 18th century tomb (built between 1790 and 1824) of Mah Laqa Bai in Moula Ali has now been restored to its original avatar and will be re-inaugurated on March 6.

The exquisite walls, ceilings and embellishments of the mausoleum, built for the renowned courtesan and poet from the Nizam's era, Mah Laqa Bai, which had started to fall apart due to poor maintenance, will once again be on display. The year-long restoration drive has given a facelift to the tomb's gateway, its two sprawling `dalans' (verandahs) and the entire tomb itself. The project was funded by the US Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation.

Renovated 150 year old 'Ameer Mahal' Drabar Hall: Reopened by Governor Barnala

Quote:
Tamil Nadu Governor Sujit Singh Barnala has said the Amir Mahal in Indo-Saraceic architectural style traced its lineage from the second Caliph of Islam, Hazareth Omar Bin Khattab.

Noting that the most celebrated of Nawabs was Muhammed Ali Wallajah of the Carnatic who built the Chepauk Palace, the Governor said and added history revealed the cordial relationship between the Nawabs of Arcot and the Hindus of the State.

The 150-year-old Amir Mahal Darbar Hall, the residence of the Prince of Arcot, was opened on Sunday after undergoing a Rs.3-crore repair and renovation exercise.

Reliving its long hospitality tradition, the lit-up foyer of the Amir Mahal was once again teeming with dignitaries as Governor Surjit Singh Barnala cut the ribbon to formally launch the renovated premises.

Earlier, there was a short recital of verse from the Quran by the Chief Kazi to the Tamil Nadu government, Mufti Kazi Salahuddin Mohammed Ayub.

This bond of brotherhood has strengthened the relationship and unity among the people, paving the way for communal and religious harmony, he said.

The Governor called for passing on the tradition of harmonious coexistence, which was the strength of the nation, to the next generation.

N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, said the restoration of the Amir Mahal, which had as its three components the reception, durbar and banqueting hall, was a major challenge. Though well preserved, the structure needed radical repair and restoration, he said.

Noting that “history speaks to us in many ways” in every part of the Amir Mahal, Mr. Ram said the secret behind the institution's survival was that it was guided by a succession of people who were deeply committed to the idea of India.

Central to this idea of India was the dual principle of equality and non-discrimination and upholding communal amity and secularism by keeping religion and politics apart, Mr. Ram added.

Outlining the origins of the Amir Mahal, the Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali — who is the eighth Prince — said the monument had undergone its first major renovation in its 150-year-old history.

The work of restoring the historic monument was a delicate task undertaken by the Central Public Works Department(CPWD), especially as the premises had nearly 600 residents, he said.

N. Ravi, Additional Director-General, CPWD (Southern Region), said the work took over four years to complete, partly due to the delay in securing various administrative sanctions.

Great care was taken throughout the project to retain the heritage of the building, he said.

CPWD officials said the renovation work started with soil stabilization measures with lime injections and also involved erecting six additional columns to support the structure, providing RCC panels and complete reconstruction of the portico.

People got curious when a skeleton resembling that of a small dinosaur was found in Choodsing ki Haveli which is going under restoration. The archelogical department couldn't figure out anything so gave the skeleton to the forest department where DFO Y.C. Sharma made clear that the skeleton was of a patagoh and not a dinosaur.
