Milan's Passante
There was a big thread in the last winter about Milan's new suburban railway tunnel being completed through downtown. I was curious about the ridership numbers and overall performance of the new tunnel. Is there congestion issues? Has it eased congestion on the railway line that goes around the city?

Ya, and somehow I never understood what the Passante was...some messages seemed to describe it as a line itself, and others as a very long passage tunnel, linking stations from other lines that would otherwise not allow for transfers.

The passante is the long underground tunnel that crosses the city where most of the S-lines meet, and that links the S-lines with all the M-lines.
here is the map:

When is the final link from Pta. Vittoria onwards going to open that will allow for the rest of the S-Lines to be started?

As European said Milan Passante is a tunnel running under the center of Milan from West to East
The tunnel is linked with the national railways network (F.S.) and Ferrovie Nord Milano network (a society with an own network for local transport in Milan area and Lombardy) Passante was thought to "pass-by" Milan, linking the branches coming from opposite directions, without run on Milan rail ring Passante is completely dedicated to Suburban trains wich are the only ones to use it With its stations underground in the center of the city it consents a very good interchange with urban transportation network (busses, trams and metros) and it can be used as a metro-line itself, in central stretch trains have a frequency under 5 minutes With the completion of the tunnel at the begin of 2005 Passante became fully operative and the new network of Lines S (Suburban railways) started This is the scheme of underground stations of Passante It is the grey stretch the proper underground tunnel: here in this map it indicates the stretch of S10, an S line which works as a Shuttle between the stations of Porta Vittoria and Lancetti ![]() Here you can see Passante in its "true" run through the city and its link with still existing railways network and metro interchanges ![]() Some wievs of Passante tunnel ![]() Passante underground stations LANCETTI P.ta GARIBALDI ![]() ![]() ![]() REPUBBLICA ![]() ![]() ![]() P.ta VENEZIA ![]() ![]() DATEO ![]() P.ta VITTORIA ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Nowadays they're thinking to build a second Passante to "close" the rail ring, with a direction N/W - South... --------------------------- Thanks to www.msrmilano.com www.************** www.treni-dintorni.com www.metroetram.altervista.org www.marcofreddi.org http://urbanrail.net

Thanks everyone. Those pics were great and thanks for the updates. It sounds like a successful project.
The stations seem very large. How many cars are in each train set? And since when does it snow in Milan....

The trains of the Line S10, the one that runs in the Passante, are the TAF, 103 meters long, double decks, 874 people (476 seats).
platform long 250 meters train frequency: 3 minutes for 19 hours per day max high speed: 60 km/h cost of the urban portion of the Passante: 880 Millions of Euro = 1.068 Millions of USD then there are many other type of trains that runs inside the Passante, but all are not longer of 200 meters. --------- snow. every year there are normally 4 or 5 days of snow in the propre Milano (the small municipality of 182 square km). normally it snow between late december to late february. outside the inner city the snow days are many more. (i think normally around 15 to 20 each year). the snowest area is the Brianza, an hills area northern than Milano, between the city and the lake district. the last big one was 4 or 5 years ago, when it snow for 2 days, and there was 30 cm in Milano and an half meters in Monza and Brianza. the biggest one was in the mid 80's when there was more than 1 meters in the propre Milano. |

Trains are delivered from the builder in compositions of 5 cars (MCH-M-M-M-MCH) and 3 cars (MCH-M-MCH). Service is mostly carried out with 5 cars compositions, strengthened in rush hours with 3 cars compositions, having then 8 cars trains. From http://www.msrmilano.com/hometot.htm This is an exemple of composition of 3 cars of Passante trains: they're doubble deckers named TAF (Treni Alta Frequentazione) This is an image of new trains ordered ![]() Quote:
